Mustang with Ecoboost and IRS confirmed

IRS has been confirmed for a while, but ecoboost hasn't.

Ford has finally let the proverbial cat out of the bag, confirming what most Mustang enthusiasts and automotive journalists already knew; the 2015 Mustang is getting a 2.0 liter, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine. Additionally, the next Mustang will get an independent rear-suspension, and a new small-displacement, high-powered V6 engine called “Project Nano.”

Under CEO Alan Mulally’s “One Ford” plan, there will be a lot more platform sharing between the various markets Ford sells cars in. The Mustang is definitely going to Europe, and may head over to Asia as well. Hence the smaller motor and independent rear-suspension, which will better appeal to European sensibilities. The report also mentions a small-displacement, high-output V6…but no mention of a V8 engine.

As I mentioned in the Best Handling thread, the next gen Mustang and Camaro will hopefully be world class performers without equals even if you spend $30k more.

So does this mean the base mustang will get the 4 cyl & 6 cyl, while (hopefully) the GT still gets a nice rumbly V8??

No way in hell they are going away with V8. THat would be the dumest move they can possibly make.

IMO Ford needs a separate 4 cyl turbo RWD car (light weight). I don't think Mustang will work for that purpose (too heavy).

I doubt they will get rid of it even just strictly from a financial POV. Although it was essential a redesign of the Cammer motor as I understand it I believe it was a fairly significant one, and it's all around a great motor so I doubt they would put it out of service so quick

Three engine choices seems a little silly. Especially when you factor-in that 'special edition' cars like the Boss 302 and the Cobra uses yet another V8 engine than the standard 5.0.

The 2.0T provides the much heavier Taurus with 32mpg, so I would think the lighter (albeit more aggressively-geared) Mustang should get around that as well.

Not sure why the V6 even is in the picture to be honest.

Hopefully they ditch the Chinese MT as well...

I think so. Hell would freeze over before the Mustang loses its V8.

Agreed. Unfortunately some of the V8s available over the years were pretty poor options for any engine. 😉

That's definitely not the case now though, the 5.0L has been a great powerplant.

Don't confuse the domestic offerings with the overseas ones. Ford has been pretty open about the new Mustang being a global car. No way in hell they ditch the V8 for domestic buyers.

Huh, the current v6 only weighs about 3500 lbs. Due to Ford's recent design philosophy I would expect this new one to weigh more like 3300 or so, depending on engine.

Not likely to see them do anything smaller, ie miata competitor. Can't see it fitting much in their lineup nor would it likely sell well enough to bother.

Everybody is going overboard with the turbo 4 cylinders. The v6 already gets 20/30

A smaller V6 makes sense. There's a gap in modern cars between the 4 cylinders with 150-200hp (BRZ, Miata, etc) and big V6 engines with 300hp. A 3000lb car with 250hp that gets maybe 25/33mpg would be good

300hp 2.0L turbo - base
400hp 3.5L turbo - midrange?
500hp 5.0L - gt
700hp - gt500

This would be a nice option to have with the new mustang.

Still too much, it needs to be UNDER 3000lbs

You guys need to keep in mind that manufacturers are hard pressed to meet CAFE standards by keeping big power plants under these hoods. Someone said that IT would be stupid for Ford to lose the V8. Everyone and their brother said it would be stupid for BMW's M to not have a high revving, NA Vsomething under the hood, but they did. For nothing other than meeting the requirements of some government body.

Soon will be the day that these cars will have turbo 4s and 6s while only the top models may retain the V8. Hell, even the new M3 will have a 450HP turbo 6.

We all love the sound, but don't knock "lesser" power plants. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again, it's not whatcha got, but whatcha do with it.

Most Mustangs sold have the V6 anyway, and I'm guessing most will have the I4. The V8 is kind of a halo. I really doubt it would be worth it to lose the halo effect considering the miniscule effect on CAFE rating from switching to a turbo V6.

A 3.0L V-8 would be perfect in my opinion, especially if they had a twin-turbo option. Those are the basic engine specs of the Ferrari 288 GTO. I know it weighs less, but that's also a car from 1986. Modern tech could make an engine like that much more powerful. Plus, Ford is pushing for lower weight in their cars and we will have that IRS. I have hope for the next Mustang. I'd like a DSG also, but maybe that's too much. Just don't screw up the styling Ford.
