I have a Pc and ADSL. I want to network another pc. So its total of 2 Pcs at home. I have a Linksys hub and some cat 5 cabling and 2 NICs. Will this setup work? What is good software for networking and does anyone know any good sites? My PC currently has an NIC in it due to the fact I have the ADSL. So this means I'll have 2 NICs in my PC?

Glad to listen and learn thanks....

depends on the DSL service. some let you connect a hub directly to the DSL modem and you are all set. some require routers especially ones that require you to "dial up".

what's your DSL connection?

Ok Quick there are 2 really easy ways.

1) you can go out and buy a broadband [cable/xDSL] router and just follow the instructions and you are set. This setup will work with what you have, except that you will not need your hub.
EASIEST
Or,

2) You can go out and buy another NIC, put 2 of them in one machine. One goes to the hub and one goes to the DSL modem. You just need to enable ICS [internet connection sharing] on the NIC connected to the DSL modem. This will automatically set your machine up as a DHCP server. Now for the other machine you just put your nic in and set it up to use DHCP to lease an IP address and that is about all. I had this setup going with my cable at my house so i know it works. I believe you must either have Windows ME or Win2k for this to work [you could also have Win NT4.0, but i assume if you did then you would already know how to do this and would not be asking].
CHEAPEST.

Hi, and thanks alot.
I've got some questions though. I think I will go with the second idea since I have all of that stuff.

I have Windows 2000 on my PC and the other PC has win98 will this work? Can i cross network 2 different OSes?

Yep... it'll work fine. Since you have 2 NIC's in addition to the one you have from Verision for the DSL service, put one in each computer, so you'll end up with 2 in your computer. Enable ICS in Win2k for the NIC that the DSL modem is plugged into, and allow it to set the IP address for your other NIC to 192.168.0.1. On your Win98 computer, set it up to automatically obtain an IP address, rather than specifying one yourself. Reboot the computer to activate the changes, and you should be all set. It works great here, with ICS and 2 NICs in my Win2k computer sharing my cable connection with the WinME computer across the hall. Before I had WinME on the other computer, I had Win98 on it, so it should work fine with your setup as well.

Quick6,

What kind of DSL modem do you have? Is it external? If so, is it the Cisco 675?

If you are lucky enough to have the Cisco, it is also a router. It does NAT and DHCP, so you wouldn't need any connection sharing software. You'd just plug it in to your hub, and the systems in to the hub.
