Must-play games?

Finally got a new pc and would like to know of some must-play games that I've missed out on for the past 6 years or so. Any genre is fine. I could look up a list, but there are always gems that I miss out on and want the opinion of peers!

I'd suggest you do a search for the 200 other threads on this exact same subject, but I know the search here sucks ass.

Mass Effect - Combat is weak, gameplay is mediocre in many parts, but the story is so fucking epic and well-made you really cant pass it up. If for some reason the game is kicking your ass, cheat to get ahead. You really wont miss much in the way of experience. Its the things outside of combat that are worth seeing. Also, dont waste time with the annoying side-quests. Especially treasure hunting.

Cant think of much else right now. I am more in favor of the games that came out in 99-2002, and not much since has impressed me.

on the contrary, i thought the combat to mass effect was excellent, while the story, though good (and certainly one of the best i've seen in a while) was not as epic. the combination of action and story, though, did make it an epic game overall

The Valve pack of games: Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2.
Doom 3,
Fall Out 3,
Stalker (I liked the first one a bit more),
Oblivion,
the Total War series of games is really good.

hmmm....

How many can I list without looking anything up?

FEAR
Gothic 2 is later than 2003, right?
I'm loving X2 now, that came out in 2003.
Far Cry
Doom 3, HL 2
The Witcher
Freelancer
Stalker
Galactic Civ 1&2

ugh, my brain is cramping.

I have to give my obligatory "I'm strictly FPS guy" but this is a very good start. Just throw in the:
FEAR series
Half-Life 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
World of War and Wolfenstein aren't too bad...

The combat was good if you enjoy a first person shooter with stats. I always turned it down to casual settings so I could enjoy the story and dialog more. I hate first person shooters personally and its a real turn off to have FPS style combat bring twitch game play into an RPG.

1st person shooter show the the zoom the camera angle to the stock of the gun.... i think you mean 3rd person shooter... Mass effect kept crashing on my pc so i decided to get the 360 version. Gameplay sucked ass, the shooting felt like something from a ps1 game with a crappy cover system. Also they made you ride that buggy tank and shoot at the same time... which was just stupid.
