Well, tried that. Still cannot find a way out of the cave. Every time I think I have "seen the light," it turns out to be the light at the beginning where I started.

There was one spot where a voice came up and said "losing energy," and when my health went all the way down, the screen went black and nothing. Had to restart, as in reload previous save.

The "losing energy" part is the way to go.

Right after that you exit the cave.

I'm in the sub, all the KPA are dead, and I can't open the door to get to the bridge. It shows the icon for "open", but nothing happens. I've reloaded a few times and killed the KPA guys numerous different ways (per Wheezer), but the door just won't open. Is this a bug, or am I not seeing something? (PM me if the answer would be a spoiler)

if you are in the room with the green button you press that, but you have to back out of the room and go backtrack down the hall and if I remember correctly there are 2 doorways, go through the right doorway, that will lead you to the rods.

you need to press a button on the console to raise them.
