If you plan on upgrading your mobo in 6 months. I suggest that you keep good backups of your critical data. Because when you upgrade the mobo you should reformat your hard drives, swapping mobos without reformatting is always trouble.

Aww see...I DID screw up....I didn't realize I hadn't chosen the Winchester core...DAMN IT! Oh well...Geez that sucks...

RAM I did get 512x2 I accidently neglected to say that and I also got the expensive stuff because I'm thinking more for the future, when I do upgrade to a new MB I will likely OC, BUT now that I screwed up and chose the wrong CPU core..I dunno...

How bad is it that I screwed up like that? Whats the differences? Anyone have benchmarks?

Thanks for the heads up GuitarDaddy, I would have done this anyway, but its good to know that it is the CORRECT thing to do.

Thanks for all the replies...for the MOST part it looks like I came out OK with my decisions, but I really screwed up on that CPU...damn it!

You may want to try to call Egg after you receive it and tell them you made a mistake and thought you ordered the Winchester........if your cordial with the C/S rep., they may allow you to send it back, waive the restock, and send out the Winnie.

I know you're in a hurry though so just giving a suggestion!

That's a call you'll have to make.......the Winnies do run cooler/take marginally less power, but that's about it IMHO.

can you explain why he's "going to take a hit" as far as performance goes with 4x512 ram? I am in the early stages of building a system like this, with similar priorities, and was strongly considering 4x512. Does this happen with only some chipsets? I am considering either the
NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra chipset, or the nForce4 SLI... haven't decided yet. Do these chipsets bring the memory speed down with 4 dimms?

They say that using all 4 slots will slow down the ram speeds. So if you're set on getting atleast 2 gigs Like I was, then you should get 1gig sticks. I opted to just get the 1 gig for now because I wanted the high performance RAM but didnt want to pay crazy for 1 gig sticks. Plus I just really wanted the ballistix

and that is true across all motherboard chipsets? isn't the memory controller integrated into the processor w/ amd 64's? so in a nutshell, if 4 dimms are installed, the memory slows down, end of story?

As far as returning the CPU and getting a Winchester core, I don't believe Newegg has any retail 3500+ Winchesters. So you would probably have to return it for a refund (likely having to pay restock fee), then buy the retail version from someone else.
As for OC'ing on the 130nm core, it still can be done. The problem you would most likely run into is that you will likely need a better HSF than stock to get much of an OC. Whereas the 90nm (Winchesters) OC quite well on stock cooling.
