Must have programs for a new computer for protecting it online

Parents bought a new computer that I am to setup when I see them for the holiday. What are some must haves free programs as far as protecting the computer from spyware and other malicious programs,

AntiVirus a must
Other than ad-aware, what else for spyware?

Definitely install Firefox for them. I put it on my dad's and brother's computers and I've had a lot less headaches since.

Set up a limited account that they can use for everyday tasks (browsing the web, email, etc.). Without administrative access, many viruses and spyware programs cannot propagate.

sounds really smart...but they'll be calling everytime they need to install something new...

If you can make them Limited users, that is a very nice boost to your overall security strategy. Even if you can't, you might look at these suggestions under the ongoing prevention part, down the page a screen.

For example, configuring the antivirus software properly can make the difference between stuff being detected or not, or the user being given the option to (foolishly) override the protection or not, etc. Setting strong passwords on the Admin-class accounts will throw a curve at many Trojans that look for weak/blank passwords so they can appropriate the Admin powers for themselves. Disabling System Restore will often help ease the removal if they do get the system infected.

Education is important too. Try to explain to them that where there's shiny bait, there's a hook inside. The word "FREE!" should be their #1 clue to be skeptical of whatever kind of bait the adware/spyware people are using as a come-on.
