I recently borrowed the ethernet cord from my GF's laptop. When I was taking it out, i accidently removed the card with it and just plugged it back in.

I guess she's claiming that her internet connection isn't working at all now. It's fine in her device manager, I even told her to uninstall it and have it reinstall by itself after rebooting, whcih she did. But still no go.

I'm referring to this thread, but have a different issue.

The card gets an IP address with a correct DNS server and everything, but times out when pinging the Gateway or any internet address....

What's the issue?

There is no need to have two threads

Ok so you should have the following in network settings:
- Obtain IP Automatically
- Obtain DNS automatically

What network services do you have installed? You only really need TCP/IP unless you have a VPN or AOL.
Also try disabling DHCP and see what that does.

Okay... to make sure that the ping test is true (basic TCP/IP functioning correctly), trying pinging "loopback"

ping 127.0.0.1

That should get you four replies. That's showing you that Client for MS Networks is installed and working properly. That shows you that TCP/IP is installed and working properly (for the most part).

If that works, try pinging her own IP address (the IP that is assigned to the computer via DHCP). The packets don't actually leave the computer, so you should get ping times <0 or something like that - the same results of pinging loopback.

If none of that works, post here along with her OS and I'll go from there. :)

You can't "disable" DHCP. If you set anything other than "obtain IP address automatically", you'll need to have an IP to enter in place of a DHCP address. And that can only work if you're using the IP that the ISP is expecting to come from that computer.

It's best to just set it DHCP and leave it - since he was talking about the computer corrrecting "getting" IP and DNS... which tells me that he's on a DHCP network.

I think the gateway is down, so she wont be able to get on the internet untill its back up.

Alright, ffm, i will run these tests when she gets back from class. Thanks for the help :) I thought you were around for only mayhem ;)

BTW -- what's the probability I fried the card when I accidently removed it with the lappy powered on? Could it possibly be friend and still obtain an IP address? that's the part that's boggling my mind....

Oh, and the OS is Win2k Pro
