I've heard it argued that keeping the women hidden and submissive during everyday life helps Muslim men appreciate their beauty even more when they're behind closed doors. Obviously I can't judge whether this is the truth or not, but I have a hard time believing that *every* devout Muslim man is a total woman-hater.

It is not only the praticioners of Islam that are at fault, like many who are uneducated on the topic seem to think, it is the religion itself. IT does condone killing of Kafirs (infidels i.e. people who aren't of the book).

I don't have any figures, etech, but I suspect the majority prefer peace and don't follow the "dumb" stuff in the Koran just as most Christians don't follow every tenet of the bible.

In the interest of equal time, the supreme Nigerian Islamic body said Muslims should ignore the fatwa issued against the reporter. Good news for the reporter. Too bad some 200 people are dead.

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigeria's supreme Islamic body said Thursday Muslims should ignore a fatwa issued by a northern state calling for the death of a journalist whose article on the Miss World pageant sparked bloody riots.

The statement by the Jama'atu Nasril Islam was circulated as President Olusegun Obasanjo faced angry church leaders in the riot-torn city of Kaduna who said most of the more than 200 dead in the unrest were Christian.

Conservative Zamfara state issued the fatwa against Isioma Daniel, a female journalist in her early 20s, whose article on the Miss World pageant enraged Muslims. The Kaduna office of her newspaper ThisDay was razed by irate Muslim youths at the start of the riots on Nov. 20.

"The Zamfara state government has no authority to issue fatwa and the fatwa issued by it should be ignored," the statement said.

The journalist, who has fled Nigeria, had written that the Prophet Mohammad would have approved of Miss World. Organizers hurriedly shifted the pageant to London because of the Kaduna bloodshed.

There is no doubt in my mind that the followers of Islam are more violent than thier christian counterparts. There is no mystery that Islam tends to lend itself to fanaticism more than Christianity, it does. But this has nothing to do with the actual religion....

First, it is a fact that Islam is very popular in very POOR parts of the world. This doesn't mean Islam is a poor man's religion, but we all know of the problem's in third world countries. Crime, high birth rates, disease, starvation, and war are a daily part of peoples lives in these parts of the world and it eats away at thier humanity.

Second, Islam is a very potent political force in these countries. In short, seperation of church and state does not exist, and it shows. EVERY religion that has been a huge political factor in its own government has ALWAYS abused its power by proganda, torture, and its own stupid laws. This might be the biggest factor as to why Islam is very dangerous right now.

Third, Islam is a YOUNG religion. Look at what was going on in the christian world when christianity was young. The religion was all about converting as many people as possible, whether they wanted to or not. Entire peoples were killed in the name of religion, and Islam is showing a similar side to this.

Like it or not, the world's largest religion will be Islam, and it will rule this century. You can't fight numbers, and the numbers say they are giving birth way faster than anyone else. But this has nothing to do with the religion. Its all about the surrounding details. Islam is just a catalyst to becoming violent, but not more than any other religion,

Dude, you made a great post. Most Americans have very little knowledge about these things, I would like to add a FOURTH major reason these things are happening:

Fourth, for most of the last 1,300 years the Muslim world has remained culturally unchanged, not one iota. They have been exposed to more cultural forces of change in the last 20 years than in their entire history combined, mostly through the American media. This has put incredible strain the culture of every Muslim country in the world, and many of them cannot handle it. For a comparison, the Vietnam era of the late 60's in the US was a very minor cultural shift, and if I remember a lot of people here died in riots (Kent St. anyone?).

Although we are disgusted that they killed 50 people, they are disgusted that we put so much pornography on TV and on the internet, and that even children can see it. Its all in your value system.

This, like the Ireland things, is going to blamed on religion when it is really not. It is about cultural change and how we resist it. America will continue to be hated by the conservatives in Islam for a long time, or until they all get a PS2.

One disagreement I will make, and I have been to the Muslim world, is that Christianity is growing fast in many Muslim Countries. 50 years ago Nigeria was mostly Muslim and Anamist, today it 50% Christian. In Iran, Christianity is growing at a rate of 13% per year, a rate Islam cannot match. Muslims are feeling a lot of pressure cuturally and religiously, and it will show in even more riots and wars. What amazes me is not how much like this has happened, but how little. In one of the posts someone stated that we are heading toward WWIII (or V?) and that is a very real possibility. Culture is serious stuff to a lot of people.
