Why should it matter if I said Mohammed is a pig .. who did that hurt? wouldn't it only hurt if it was an uncovering of the truth..
Sort of like those whackjobs and their violent protests over cartoons and "rumors" of a Koran being used as toilet paper somewhere in the world..

True, but I doubt the guy getting run over will start another debate with a cabbie anytime soon.
Personally, I don't try to get into heated debates with people who:
Drive me around in their cab.
Prepare food for me.
Check me through airline security.
Cut my hair.

go up to a black man driving a cab and use the N word and he will punch you in the face
go up to an asian man driving a cab and tell him that asian people cannot drive and he will kick you out or hit you in the face
go to the South with an insulting Jesus t-shirt and you will be stoned.
Piss people off with stereotypes or insult people that they love/worship and they can flip.
I simply threw in a "I wonder" statement.

Whatever the percieved justification, it is still attempted murder, and I hope he gets locked up for a LONG time. IIRC this is not the first story about Somali cab drivers; there was that flap a while back about some of them not wanting to pick up fares who are carrying alcohol. IMO, if your religion gets in the way of your work, you need to be in a different line of work. This is the case whether you're a Muslim cab driver, or a Christian pharmacist (who doesn't believe in birth control, for example).
Actually, I had no idea you were of Iranian decent (what difference should it make anyway, you're American). And I don't see how this can possibly deserve a vacation?
I'm not gonna go dig up the threads where you continually deny Iranian involvement in Iraq by calling your own government liars and trusting our sworn enemy, Iran, instead.

i don't know if i could be antagonized enough to want to run someone over with my car or not, because, after all, we all have our own snapping points.
that being said, i also know that any situation can get out of hand in a split-second if one wrong word is said at exactly the wrong time, especially when religion, culture, egos and money are in dispute. there is a point where common sense tells you to back off from a point of no return. i can't see why anyone would cross that point unless they were either too ignorant about their situational awareness or had a purpose to go there from the start.
either way, it takes two to tango.
sure, the cabbie is dead wrong for what he did, and should pay the price. however, those students had something to do with provoking the cabbie, and if found liable, must be held accountable for their actions.
