This is kind of a companion to the *what are you listening to/best catalog/weird Al* threads.

It's been claimed that there isn't so much good music anymore, and I thought it would be cool to post some of the more obscure stuff in your collections. It doesn't have to be way out there, or even that obscure, just a bit off the beaten track. New is probably more interesting to most, but old music will work also. Just make it something you probably wouldn't hear on a non-college station.

Don't forget your links. It's not much fun searching around. If you've got a link to the material, use it :^)

A Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band with Choir How's that for a name? Makes Godspeed You! Black Emperor sound positively mainstream :^P Also has some of the same members.

Big Lazy A great instrumental band from Yew York.

Rain Parade Dave Roback's group from the early 80s. A leader in the Paisley Underground movement.

Bruce Springsteen Bruce Springsteen?? Really??? His Nebraska album has a stark plaintive sound that's timeless. He has plenty of detractors, but I think history will put him up with the great folk singers of the past. His urban folk is every bit as good as Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger.

Russian Circles I really don't know much about these guys. I only have 1 album, but they remind me a bit of Pelican. Heavyish melodic music.

Do Make Say Think Fine post rock

So what do you all have?

a silver mount zion(though I'm a bigger GYBE fan) and russian circles are both awesome bands, RC are local to Chicago so I've seen them a ton in tons of cool/low key places.

Murder by Death

My friend turned me on to them last year and I've been in love with them ever since. Saw them live in Philly at the First Unitarian Church one night in this small-ass basement... best show of my life.

I love that song, too. The acoustic version is nice, as well.

This song is at the end of Dead Like Me: Boom Boom Ba by Metisse

I even talked to the artist and she's going to allow me to use her music for my site's next version. Kudos to her record company for coming back to me and also giving the ok.

The only stuff I listen to that anybody here is likely to enjoy:

God is an Astronaut
Explosions in the Sky
Pelican
Red Sparowes

VERY VERY VERY good instrumental chill out music. Absolutely love it.

I'd post some links, but I'm at work, and YouTube is filtered. OF COURSE.

Harry Gregson-Williams - Deja Vu Soundtrack

WTH??

The first tune sounds kind of Floydish, and the second one sounds like Otis Redding :^D

Good stuff, I'm gonna investigate him further :^)

yeah he's awesome.

His guitar parts are easy too, which is great if you play guitar.

It's just too bad that it's super tough to sing like the guy
