Music that made an impression on YOU but did NOT with joe PUBLIC

I like some music that didn't quite make it to the big time. Some of it is obscure, while some of it is used in movies for background noise. The truth is that the music is good in my opinion but some people really don't care much for it.

One example of a soundtrack that I like is from the movie "Strange Days". It has several awesome songs to jam on the stereo. (Yes, I said "jam" - a word thats outdated now - not whatever the youngsters use to describe playing music loud...) Another one that is pretty awesome for working out in the gym is the soundtrack to "Mortal Kombat". Yeah, yeah, I know. Both suck in the opinion of most people.

What are some of your favourite soundtracks, albums, and songs that you like that the general public doesn't quite share?

I know what your talking about with the "Mortal Kombat" theme music. I crapped my pants everytime I heard it

<rushing off to find it>

home grown - act your age
that album released in '98 and was one of those good albums for teenagers to get over everything

thrice - identity crisis
released 2000... the lyrics on this album are pretty effin great IMO, and it's great musically... you just hafta listen to it yourself

<< Black/Death/Doom Metal is obscure enough? 😉 >>

Same, except add metalcore, grindcore, and thrash metal. 🙂

I love the song Ravage Ritual by Zao; most of other people hate it. Does that count?

Pretty much all j-pop, I like j-pop and I'm not japanese but the average Joe would just scratch his head, stare at me and get away as fast as possible (believe me, it has happened to me!).

Local band called 'Logan Tree'

Very simular to Dave Matthews, just a little more upbeat...

The soundtrack to "The Crow" is a modern masterpiece, guess this does not count as Joe Public would eat this up!! If you are talkin metal, Venom and Celtic Frost and others from the late 80's are excellent.

What would you consider popular with Joe Public?

Probably some unknown swiss band for you guys: The Young Gods

Their best album for me is T.V. Sky, which has one of their best songs: SkinFlowers.

But you can hear the entire album over and over and you still can hear new sounds coming out of the songs.

You can check out their website here, they have a few songs and videos available in Real Media format.

When I listened to Nihil by KMFDM, I was totally blown away. Insanity by Oingo Boingo gave me shivers, even though I had heard almost all of the stuff before that.

Not too many people like black metal that I know. Progressive rock is another favourite of mine, like Dream Theatre.

I always used to run 3 miles a day and I would always listen to the MK soundtrack when i was running

The Mortal Kombat soundtrack was played in *my* high school gym too 🙂 I also heard it a couple times at clubs and most friends at least had the main theme on their computer/on cd. That one is *fairly* mainstream, just not to the level of regular pop...

definitely the most underrated O-B disc, but then most of their work is neglected except "Dead Man's Party" and "Weird Science." The Farewell live CD is awesome.

I have a bunch of favorite singer-songwriter types that are just above cult status, like Richard Thompson, Micheal Penn, Happy Rhodes, Aimee Mann.

I loved Chris Cornell's solo album, a great evolution from the last Soundgarden disc.
