I have a few songs I wish to convert to a higher KBPS and i was wondering if this is possible to change songs from 128kbps to 200's??? If yes how so?

Any program that offers "Transcoding" can handle that for you. I forget (as I don't use it often) what program I use for it, but it offers transcoding to just about anything and it's free.

You won't gain any quality if you convert a file from 128kbps to 200 kbps. If you encode from the original source material to 200kbps, you will gain quality.

Yeah, kbps is driven off the sample rate and the sample width. I'm not really an expert, but the bottom line is that when you are working with 128 kbps audio data there is no more information in that data. If you convert to a higher bitrate all the software can do is interpolate between samples to create new data. It's exactly like scaling an image up from, say, 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768. The larger format needs more pixels. The info for those pixels isn't in the 800 x 600 image, so the program that does the scaling creates that data by inserting interpolated values. As coaster831 says, if you start with original source audio data (analog audio has essentially a limitless amount of samples in it, dependent on how fast you can sample and how much data each sample carries) and digitize at 192 kbps, or whatever, it will be better quality than 128 kbps. But you can't gain anything going the other way.

He's pretty much just telling you that there's no reason to do it (unless you have the original source) other than waste more space on whatever device will hold it.

That won't buy you any higher resolution. Transcoding takes time, but the end result will be no better than what you started with. You can't add what isn't there.

If I can interject, I have a question related to this. In the Creative Audio Console, there is a Bit Accurate tab, where this can be enabled. But I never did so, because I don't understand what it means. Can someone enlighten me?

And this is the reason many of us refuse to 'shop' at these sites. If we're paying for a song don't you think they could at least give us the option for a close-to-original quality version?

I agree. Pisser is that these sites (*cought* crap-tunes *cough*) have exclusive content. Since some artists I love have *itches of me, I must buy them and put up with the BS bloatware said programs add.

Yeah, but then if you upsampled it to 192 kbps, you would be pirating 64 kbps that you didn't pay for!
