Record Biz Crisis Worse Than Expected

The combined sales of the top 10 albums was less than 750,000 CDs last week. That's right. According to hitsdailydouble.com, this morning the record industry wakes up to the house on fire.

Unbelievable? But true. Norah Jones, Jennifer Lopez and Avril Lavigne posted far smaller numbers than predicted; the album chart was more of a disappointment than anyone could imagine. And this was after the Grammy nominations, an event which should have boosted sales.

It's hard to imagine such a thing happening in the movie business, where tight controls by the people in charge would never permit a 10-year run of poor quality product to overtake the business. What "explicit lyrics" and sampled music have been to the music business could only exist in movies if suddenly only soft-core porn were released weekly to movie houses.

I'm curious to see what the record company presidents are going to do about this frightening dip in sales. The next major release isn't until Jan. 28 -- that would be the new album by R. Kelly, the singer currently under investigation for engaging in sex with minors.

I know why sales are declining:

THE ARTISTS THAT YOU HAVE HITCHED YOUR WAGON TO SUCK!

Maybe if the "industry" stopped cramming cookie-cutter boy bands and girl pop singers down the public's proverbial throat, they wouldn't have this problem!

They can't realistically blame this on MP3 traders who wouldn't download a song by Norah Jones, Jennifer Lopez and Avril Lavigne if their life depended on it! Well they'll probably try to pin it on P2P traders but it will be total Bullsh!t, just like the music they are releasing for consumption.

The big sellers of the music industry are gone. They can't ride the wave of NSync forever. How much were the likes of JLO and Norah Jones selling pre '95? They may not have been around back then...but artists of their popularity probably weren't selling that much either.

That's what I'm saying, groups like NSync and BSB and the like are gone, and in their prime they added millions more CDs sold, so now the industry is back where it was.

Gee...maybe it could also have something to do with the fact that we're in a recession....or the fact that nearly ALL retail sales are in the shitter....or the fact that we are in the post-christmas sales slump....

Oh that's right...it's piracy.

Maybe all the Bee Bop Bozos that liked that crap have grown in age and musical tastes!

And the Big New Thing is ultra-derivative "garage bands" that are just as lightweight and prefabricated. :p

To be honest, I haven't bought an album in nearly a year, most of it because I could get it off the 'net.
However, the past few months I've stopped even downloading music because THERE'S NOTHING GOOD TO LISTEN TO.

I swear all these new artists suck.

I might check out the Transplants CD but overall music looks like the same old crap.

Hmmm.. that music has been out for 30 years. It will never be as abig as seller as the Bubble Gum Tripe of NSYNC and the Back Street "Bois"

When you have Eminem being the top seller of the year, it's no surprise sales are down.

Yeah, and people are getting smart, voting with their money and buying non RIAA music. Stuff that doesn't suck. Plus we're seeing an upsurge of euro music as they've got some really awesome stuff over there. All of it's "non-crushed into silence by the big corps", original music. :)

I wouldn't even listen to any of those 3 on the radio, much less buy their CD's. As for Eminem, I can't wait for his 15 minutes to be over.
I'm still buying some CD's though, it's just becoming harder and harder to find good music.
