throughout my life (although im only 18) i can remember what music i was listening to then. whenever i hear that old music i distinctly remember those years.

Pre 1994: Rolling Strones, Asia, Right Said Fred, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson:: Basically anything my parents put on. I remember going up to the lake home with my friends and listening to "I'm to sexy" by Right Said Fred and running in cirlces acting crazy. Very, Very fond memories, makes me wish I was a kid again.

1994: Ace of Base, Random Polka:: Was in 4th grade, but I remember listening to ace of base a lot and polka (??) for some reason

1996-1997: Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Offspring, Nirvana:: Great years, I loved this part of middle school and remember it fondly, good friends, good music, good times

1998: No Music:: Was really depressed and hated that my family had moved. At least I don't have any memories to remind me of it

1999: Korn. Generic top 40 stuff:: I didn't listen to good music, I remember though, from hearing the top 40 music of the this time how I managed to run an underground cd copying operation at my high school when I thought I was really hardcore. Things were better, but not much.

2000: Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Vandals, They Might be Giants, Radiohead, Saves the Day:: Great part of my life, met my best friends, built a wicked watercooled tower, got my first girlfriend, drivers license, started to loosen up a lot and go to parties and just have fun in general. Starting to like punk rock a lot. (Even if I was listening to fake punk at the time)

2001: Anti-Flag, AFI, Propaghandi, Fugazi, NOFX, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Radiohead, Prodigy: I started to party too much, going to too many raves, doing waaay too many drugs. I was trying to live like a rock star, I would be messed up all day long every day on really expensive drugs. At the same time I had an internship doing network administration for a local company ( i bet you know where the money was going ). When I hear music from this time period I get very sad, even though I wasn't doing good things, it was a good time and I miss how things were.

2002: Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, NOFX, Rancid, Dead Kennedys, Radiohead, Mindless Self Indulgence, Orbital, Moby, Rolling Stones:: January was horrible, and by the 31st of the month I had an overdose from oxycontin. I was listening to Radiohead in this time period, and its difficult to listen to anymore. Now I listen to mostly punk rock I hadn't heard before. I get sad listening to old music from happy times. I'm great now, but I know the music I'm listening to now might trigger good and bad memories in the future.

I've had a lot of fun writing this, remembering old times and the music of the year. It would be cool if someone else could give their input and what music they liked at the time.

Interesting question. Actually, I've loved classical and new-age (Vangelis) all my life and still do. New-age kinda molded into trance when I came to college. Of course, there is some stuff I am embarassed to admit that I listened to as a kid...like Michael Jackson, New Kids on the Block, etc...

Every summer has a certain music that when I hear, it takes me back to it. "Gettin Jiggy With it" was the only song we listened to one summer. "Doin Time" was another.. and a lot of songs by 311 remind me of this last summer

Lets see.

1982-1994: Oldies (I still really like them, but not the dominant music in my life)
1994-1995: Short Country fit. I still like Garth Brooks
1995-1998: "Alternative" like Green Day, Alice in Chains, NIN, etc
1998-2002: Heavier music like Dream Theater, Blind Guardian, with some techno and MTV type music here and there
Present: Classic Rock. Jimi, The Who, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Warren Zevon, etc.

Classical has been everpresent.

Ok, as a kid I listened to whatever everyone else did. I had no taste in music, I really did not care.
1994 - 1998 I was into the Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day and the like.
1998 - 2001 I really hated the music scene. Rap was becoming prevalant and it wasnt my thing. Everyone went to harded rock, instead of the alternative stuff I liked.
2001 - 2002 I discovered real music. I became interested in groups such as Mogwai (my personal favorite), Sigur Ros, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill... This has been greatly rewarding.

The night chicago died by paper lace
Played that old record till my mom broke it
then is was chuck berry with my ding a ling a ling
I was only four then thoug
The sight of my mother breaking all my favorite records traumatized me and I never listened to music till second grade! I can still remember the first swear word I ever heard in a song
it was guns-n-roses It's so easy... It was all down hill from there
It's a shame I still got a big old pile of those old 45's and nothing to play them on
But the memories still take me away

I can't remember back as far as 1986 (when I was born), but from some unknown point in my life until 1993 I just listened to whatever my parents listened to ( which was some jazz, and lots of old western stuff - no, not country western, but really old western stuff :disgust: ). During the period from 1994 to 1997 I was really in to classical music of many kinds, but my favorite composers were Tchaikovsky (sp?), Beethoven, and Chopin. In 1998 and 1999, I started to listen to classic rock such as Boston and Styx a lot, and I thought that AC/DC just sounded terrible (I didn't like the sound of the singer's voice, but ironically I like AC/DC now). During 2000 and 2001 I listened to stuff like Blink 182 and Green Day, although later in that period I started listening to more Pink Floyd and Metallica; this year I'm listening to more Pink Floyd than ever before, and also I am listening to "heavier" stuff like Dream Theater, as well many of the old classics again - Grateful Dead, AC/DC, Boston, Led Zeppelin, etc.

I've actully gone out and hunted down music from the previous periods of my life.

some because of good memories some because of bad. things that I learned from.

I have a stack of burned CD's Every one of them is from a different period of my life. they are titled what they contain and what it is supposed to remind me off. The tracks included all mean something particlar to that certian point in my life.

I track my life in music. it's what I breath most days it's how I survive.

Sounds pathetic eh?

you do what you have to do to make it.

8-15: Classical, Alternative (big on bands like Nirvana, Soul Asylum, Ugly Kid Joe, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.)
15-17: Classical, Alternative, Metal (mostly Pantera and Sepultura), Industrial (KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, etc.)
18-19 (Now): Classical, Alternative, Industrial (leaning more towards the NiN style than KMFDM's particular take on the genre), 80's, Electronic (Hive, Chemical Brothers, etc.), Jazz, a bit of Progressive Rock, Oingo Boingo (who of course don't fit into any genre, really), and then all the assorted stuff that doesn't seem to belong anywhere (local bands with experimental styles, exploratory stuff like noisecore, and the like).

Now that I think about it, my musical tastes have changed very rapidly for as long as I can remember. If I wanted, I could write a much more detailed roadmap, but I think these are fairly fundamental guidelines.
