I'm really getting sick of Itunes. Every so many months it seems to dactivate the license on all my legally purchased downloads from their store. I know I can just reactivate it and sync the i-pod but its a hassle and I don't realize it right away I just go a week or so with songs skipping to the next.

Where can one legally purchase mp3's without all the license/copy protect BS?

DRM sucks, you should not buy anything with DRM in it. Amazon sells MP3's, clean with no drm issues. You buy the track and do with it what you want.

I wish there were stores that had a large collection in DRM-Free lossless. Until then, I'll stick to buying CDs (as a bonus, the bands I like are not on RIAA affiliated labels).

the problem with music download sites is that it's difficult to find lesser known or obscure or foreign language bands.

I actually prefer amazon.com over this. (say what you want about lossless, but amazon's mp3s sound pretty dam good)

Amazon, Rhapsody, & Napster all have drm-free MP3's. If you don't find it there, then see who is the label/distributor/record company and go to their website. I've purchased a handful of MP3's (good quality, drm-free) directly from the label for some hard-to-find dance/trance/electronica songs.

All of these are within US borders and thus comply with royalty laws.

Anything listed as free, discounted, or is hosted outside the US is likely not complying with artist royalties and thus is ripping off someone. Many foreign bands/labels have counterpart US labels for domestic distribution.

I've been meaning to try them out... the commercial claims you can listen to the whole CD before you download it, any truth to that?

Edit: Nevermind, it was was probably just this part:

Try 'em before you buy 'em: Chances are, the music you're looking for is more than 30 seconds long. Only Rhapsody lets you listen to full-length songs before you make your purchase. Non-members can preview up to 25 full-length songs each month, and members can listen all they want.

Still need to shell out $12/month to "preview" more than 25. I was hoping they would let you sign up for an account and listen to a whole album once or something. Oh well anyway.

The only time I've bought a song online has been through Amazon. (It was a song from the TV show The Cleaner by Karmina that wasn't on their CD).
I usually buy CD's rip them to MP3 and store them, so I have a large external drive and a full closet.

There was a blurb on the radio a couple of nights ago and they said that BB and other stores were going to start selling "memory cards" with DRM-free music on them in addition to CDs. If they specified what kind of cards, I missed that part.
