only saw small patches of it in our 1-month old sod when we watered a tad too much.

your pic: what the fungus?!?!?!

It's a ball fungus that makes a spectacular puff of "smoke" when you stomp on it. The smoke is spores I guess, but they don't seem super common. I might find less than a handful a year.

Edit:
This is what they look like when they're stompable. This one's a little old, and has already leaked some magic smoke, but it still looks fun :^)

I have those mother fuckers in my front yard. Always wondered what they were 🙂

I have a explosion of these weird ass mushroom clusters/pods that grow in a way that they're somewhat buried. Really freaking strange looking, like nothing I've ever seen before.

I got a really long screw driver and poked into one and it was almost like the sound and resistance of a block of styrofoam but organic.

Then came the smell. It smelled like a dead animal with a hint of rotten fish mixed in.

I didn't take any chances and just uprooted them all and strayed the area heavily with a bleach/water mix.

Dinner? Seriously, find out if they're edible and if so sautee that shit. If they come back so much the better. 🙂

And the site was then nuked from orbit.
