Musharraf: Iraq war has made world 'less safe'
But says pulling troops too early would be a mistake

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq was a mistake that has made the world a more dangerous place, but a swift withdrawal would make matters worse, Pakistan's president said this weekend.

"I think it's less safe," Gen. Pervez Musharraf said on CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer." Asked whether he considered the invasion a mistake, the Pakistani leader said, "With hindsight, yes. We have landed ourselves in more trouble, yes."

Musharraf was in Washington on Saturday for a brief meeting with President Bush. The two discussed the issue of terrorism, bilateral concerns, relations between India and Pakistan and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (Full story)

Although ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein "was a hated man" in his own country, many Iraqis have now turned their wrath on the U.S.-led forces that remain behind to provide security for an interim government, Musharraf said.

"People at the lower level don't like the visibility of foreign troops who are in their country," he said.

Not new info. We probably shouldn't have invaded and occupied, but now that we are there we have to figure something out. Catch 22. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

PS: Musharraf is a dictator who came through power through extra-constitutional means and we shouldn't be propping him up.

Although I supported the invasion of Iraq, subsequent information has caused me to realize that it was unnecessary and the reason possibly contrived. Saddam could have been contained at far less cost in $ and lives, but somebody duped us.

I don't know if our intelligence community is actually so inept or if the administration was selective in the info they used to convince the public that we were in peril. I doubt we will ever know.

As tnitsuj said, though, we have placed our boot firmly in the mire, displacing the wretched goo, and if we pull our boot out the goo will flow back in, mixed with other undesireable flotsam that has been stirred up.

We are given the choice of taking many paths in our lives. Some of those paths are very narrow, so narrow that it is impossible to turn around and go back to the intersection. This is one of those paths.

There is one good thing that came out of this... Most of the active terrorists are trying to strike in either IRAQ or surrounding areas. They are consolidating their forces in the region.

I say, it is harder to fight an enemy if they are spread out...

So let them go to Fallujah and fight there than here or other places around the world.

Ummm...the figures bely your claims.

Most of the fighters in Iraq are Iraqis. At most, thier are a few thousand foriegn fighters in Iraq. After the State department revised its terror report for 2003, it was found that global terrorism was at its highest point ever even with the Iraq war.

Yeah, it's called fire the guy that got us there and put the country back on a sane course.

Suggestions please.

The country has rejected the first part of your suggestion.

Constructive suggestions are now required.

Yeah, but he's a 'friendly' dictator. Kind of like Saddam was, untill he wasn't useful to U.S interests anymore. If Musharraf stops being useful or starts invading other countries, same thing will happen to him that happend to Saddam. 😛
