Muscle cars - anyone have one?

Anyone own a muscle car, particularly in the 60-70s era?

I unfortunately do not own one but I know a guy who has a 69 Camaro that he restored from really crappy condition. It looks NICE. He paid like $2500 for the car and about $15k to restore it. it's now worth about $40k. seems like a pretty nice investment if you have the money and time.

He also has a crappy condition 68 camaro sitting in his garage that he is going to restore as well.
He's told me I need to come over and help him with it, but I don't really know anything about cars, let alone restoring them. Seems like it might be a kind of fun/interesting thing to do though.

You'll learn a ton working on them. To do a proper restore you need just about every skill any mechanic would have.
 
I really want to work on a project car sometime. I've done some basic mechanical work, done my own carb work on my motorcycle, etc. but nothing to the level of a full restore. I just think it'd be an amazing feeling to scoot around town in a cherry vintage muscle car knowing that I did all the work.
 
I had a 64.5 Stang for a while. Got tired of it cus everyone and their mother has one. I stuck with bugs cus I think they're cooler and not everyone mods them.
 
69 Mach 1 for me, had it since 1981. Haven't restored it yet, and its needing some serious work. Its getting to the point that I don't dare drive it cause if it ever got wrecked I'd never be able to replace it. I've always been kind of nuts about this car, if someone ran into me, I'd probably make a serious attempt to murder them.
 
I know a guy that has a 71 Mustang Mach 1 for sale with around 70-80,000 km on it. Wants like $ 5000 CAD for it or something. Apperently it's in pretty good shape. Thinking about something like this although I'm not sure where I'd store it.

That's no way to live. I drove my Shelby over 50K miles before I parked it in wait of a proper restoration. If you can't drive it then it defeats the purpose. These cars were made to be driven. Just be careful.
 
one thing that does suck about those cars though is gas mileage. the guy with the 69 Camaro says he's lucky to get 12 MPG. OUCH!

I looked at some of the new models of some of these cars and they are pretty nice looking. The newer Mustangs are sexy, imo. I like the squared look. There's a white one with 2 blue racing stripes down the middle at a local Ford dealer I drive by every day to work and that thing just looks sexy.
 
You can get decent mileage out of them if you set them up right. My galaxie would pull down 19mpg highway with its 390 big block which really isn't too bad considering. The downside being the 2.79:1 rear end ratio wasn't exactly great for performance. A newer over drive trans would help there.

one guy here has a 60-70's muscle car that can get close to 30mpg... can't remember who, though.
 
I have a 72 350 stick nova (The fun one)
and a 76 T/A in the garage. (the good looking one)
The nova needs some body love, but the right foot more than makes up for it. The T/A has about 50,000 miles on it. All the stickers have been removed and its black with red guts. Too bad its an emissions car and is a gutless wonder. 2.91 rear end gears make it a good highway roller though. The motor hardly works!
 
1966 Mustang Coupe, C-code 2bbl 289 (V8) with the C4 3-speed auto. I'm in the process of swapping in a 4-speed toploader and a built 289.

Right now we're sanding it down and getting ready for paint. No pictures yet. 🙁
 
My uncle has a 1966 'Vert Stang with the 289? I believe.

Either way it's numbers matching and that thing is his baby.

Paranoia is not so easy to shut off. I agree with you, but I admit to not being rational about this car. The other part is that, if I get it out and drive it, I have an endless supply of nuts trying to buy it. ( They never want to pay more than $500.00) Someone in the past modified it and installed a set of thunderbird taillights. Lots of people think its a shelby. (not even close if you know anything) I have had to physically remove people from my yard, because they tried to buy it and wouldn't take no for an answer. I had one guy argue with me for 30 minutes about whether it was a shelby or not. I had the shaker stolen once, and they wrecked the grill and some of the sheet metal on the front end trying to get past the hood locks. I love the car, but it has some serious downsides. It gets about 19 mpg on the highway, but drops way down in town. Partly because it is very fun from stoplight to stoplight.
 
I've only personally owned a 89 Camaro Iroc-z and 2000 Trans Am.

My dad, though, has a 1969 Chevelle SS with a 402 (not the original 396 it came with). It was his first car he bought for 600 back in the day, and has been sitting in the back yard forever. The body is in terrible shape, but the engine does still run. He keeps talking about restoring it, and I can't wait for that day to come. It crushes me to see it just sitting there instead of tearing up the streets. 🙁

I saw an Iroc-z today, finally worked out what they're talking about in the song "Teenage Dirtbag'.

Looked kinda like a minimal shell of a body on a motor and chassis...and fast...wrapped around a tree fast 😉

As redneck as they may be I think they are sharp looking cars if in nice condition. Obviously, wrapped around a tree doesn't meet that qualification!

In regards to the song, I never brought a gun to school so it's not about me. 🙂

Don't get me wrong, looked very sharp, just very stripped down & minimalist! (I'll also grudgingly concede to liking the song) 😱

Should have looked to see if it was RHD or LHD, no idea if they were ever imported by Holden?

 
My dad had an Olds 442 that he had so insane, I wish I could find my scanner to post pictures of this thing.

I cannot even believe how fast this car was, apparently he was able to toss the rear end out with only a slight blip of the throttle. Nobody else would even drive it, they were too scared of it. He got rid of it because they had me. =/
 
I have a few between my pops and I over the years that we have collected. We do almost everything ourselves. 57 Chevy, 67 Fastback, 71 Camaro, 72 Stingray, and a couple late models 94 Cobra and 83 GT. Looking to get my Dad into a z06 or a new camaro SS after taking care of an engagement ring.
