Seems my DSL has an intermittant bandwidth issue - dropping from 1.5Mbps to about 24Kbps. At first, powercycling the modem worked. But not last night. It was late and I called it a night. This morning, same thing. So I call Verizon...

Estimated 30 minute hold time, so it's time to tinker. I power off and on the modem one last time and it comes on as does a support rep. Of course as soon as it connects, I test as I'm giving him the info, and it tests out fine.

Grrr....

Well at least it was a personal problem that was fixed rather other way around.

I frequently get calls with professors crying "THIS DOESN"'T WORK BLAH BLAH I'M A STUPID OLD FART STILL RELYING ON OVER-HEAD PROJECTORS AND ACETATE ROLLS"

I head over to see wtf is there problem, and once I enter the room, they say "we figured it out".

*sigh

Thing is, it's a repeating intermittant problem. That means there's an issue with either the computer, the router, the modem, the house wiring, the telco wiring, or something internal to the telco.

I'd prefer that the issue persisted so it could get troubleshooted and not occur ever again.

You could just lie to them and say the problem is persisting even now and see what their suggestions are..... like throw salt over ur shoulder 😱

I'm looking for an actual permanent fix, not suggestions on how to possibly fix it. If there's an intermittant line issue, it's something that I'm not going to be able to fix anyway, so what good is lying in this case?

I was getting fully intermittent connectivity (was on or off, not regular or slow) and fixed it by updating my modem's firmware... couldn't hurt to try.

I had a similar problem. Turns out it was the rain that was causing some kind of short in the junction box outside. Bellsouth told me to call them next time I experienced the problem so at 10pm one night it happened, I called, the tech was outside at the box fixing it at 11pm. Nice service 🙂.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be something similar - a bad run or humidity. It's an older house so it may even be my wiring.
