It isn?t worth the headache trying to fix something that is cache related. Intel did a good job on 32bit single thread applications but when it comes to vista/64bit and multitasking, you are definitely better off w/ good old AMD. In the task manager, do you see 2 cpus in the performance tab? Check to make sure.

was away on thanksgiving. i have all the latest updates and i actually reinstalled windows on a single 80GB SATA2 drive I had laying around. it was giving me the same crap.

yes, there's 2 CPUs showing in task manager.

already ran memtest before i even did the first windows installation.

all cpu and memory settings are at default.

Update your BIOS. That's a prerequisite with a C2D-based system, it seems.

When you reinstall windows, I suggest taking out the other expansion cards such as modem (if you have one), soundcard, etc. Install windows with your video card. Test performance (surf the web and try to chat). Then install chipset drivers, test performance. I do this and write everything down in a checklist. This way you can narrow down the culprit(s). Keep us posted. I might be moving to a core2 duo setup pretty soon so perhaps you can help us both in adverting problems.

I was reading your post yesterday because I too had the same problem with the x6800 c2d. I don't know if you tried the hotfix that was suggested (Microsoft Hotfix 896256). I got home yesterday and installed it and my problem was gone (after rebooting of course). I was able to run avg anti-spyware, avg anti-virus, pestpatrol, counterspy, spybot & ad-aware. Before, I couldn't even run 2 of them without bigtime lag.

If this doesn't help, you might have to do a fresh xp install with sp2 and run the hotfix immediately.

(After reading the thread all the way it apears this can't be your problem ... but it might help someone else searching for a similar problem.)

I used to have similar problems on my dual Xeon rig in the sig. For a few weeks anytime there would be a disk access (Though the RAID 5, RAID 0, or Sigle Disks... yeah it has a few drives ... ) the whole system would stutter.

Turned out that under the disk manager it was still looking for an old array that had been replaced by the new Promise RAID 5. (I'd looked in the disk manager before, but I hadn't noticed it as you needed to scroll down to get to see it.) Once I removed the array from Windows disk manager the whole system became snappy again.

wow I dont think my multitasking performance is THAT great on my E6700 but that definitely sounds like something is amiss. Maybe the wrong chipset drivers are installed somehow?

When I first got my E6300 my desktop ran horribly. When I quickly opened up two programs the system would just halt and slowly catch up. This was with an intel DP965LT mobo and 2 gigs of kingston value ram. All my past experiences with intel boards were fine with not touching any memory settings inthe BIOS. However with the conroe I had to manually set the timings in the BIOS. It has been running like a champ ever since.
