Multiple Users, Multiple DNS Servers

I have several individuals behind a router. The router has dynamic DNS from the ISP. Some of these individuals bypass the router's DNS settings by manually changing their networking settings on their respective PC's. Some choose GoogleDNS, some OpenDNS, and some choose the router's IP for the ISP's DNS servers. Is there anything wrong with this setup, or should all users use the router's IP for the ISP's DNS? The individuals are happy with their choices, but I'd like to know if there are any drawbacks to this type of setup per computer, security or functionality wise.

None at all, it seems like you arent on a domain so any issues with internal resolution would be out of the picture. The only thing i can think if is if one of the servers goes down it wouldnt be immediately obvious, but if they are savvy enough to change their dns they are also savvy enough to change it to something else should a problem arise

you delegate the DHCP, you delegate the dns entry in your ads, and you delegate which dns they use.

CDN's get pissed with googledns 😉

If you are in an Active Directory environment, there is a problem. Otherwise, there really isn't...unless you want to employ something like OpenDNS's content filtering. In that case, you need to either restrict changes to DNS settings or restrict access to other DNS servers at the firewall.

Assuming that the OP is talking about regular Peer-to-peer Network.

Technically it does not matter, this configuration of personal DNS can be done on each individual computer..

If it is a Business peer-to-peer Network, it is a matter of Business policy.

On Home type environment lock up the Router, and let the users do it on their computers at their own risk.
