Multiple USB ports, or 1 split

I have a laptop which has 3 USB ports.

Does that mean it has 3 X 480Mbps or 1 port that allows three items to be plugged in directly.

I intend on using a USB to VGA device which would eat all the 480mbps and then some.

Cheers.

I've had several external hard drives connected to one motherboard using up all the available USB ports and I was doing data backups from all three; there was no noticeable slowdown.
