multiple thread bumping

i know this post might hurt or anger some peoples feelings so i will tread lightly. i am noticing in the for sale forum that certain people bump multiple threads sometimes 6-10 at a time sometimes more. now i am not saying it is wrong to bump threads for a friend or somebody that gave you a good deal i am talking about those that are doing it just to increase thier post count. plus i think it is inconsiderate too that this is done as it drops the peoples threads who are not getting this done for them. it seems in watching it is a group thing but i am not sure on that. i will not mention names that are doing it just watch the for sale forum and you will see it. sorry if i angered or hurt any feelings

I understand where you're coming from but I think it's good courtesy to bump a thread especially if you've dealt with that person or that person is offering nice items at nice prices.

But like I said, I totally understand where you're coming from as many people do it to increase their post count (probably not on purpose). I know intogamer did get a small vacation for doing such things (I believe) so I know the mods do pay attention.

I would just bite the bullet if I were you and leave it up to the mods to do their job they do so well 🙂

It's like peer-to-peer reputiation. If you know the deal's genuine and good, you bump the thread although some people do bump it just for the post count. That couldn't hurt. 😉

I've seen a discussion board in which posting in certain forums would not 'earn' post counts. For example, posting in FS/FT, Off-Topic, and P&N would not add to your post-count. Good/bad idea?

A few years ago, when Sysopt.com was my main online hangout, they implemented that in their OT section.

those are the ones i am mostly talking about. maybe a rule that you can only bump 3-4 threads in given ammount of time, say half an hour to prevent peoples threads from getting bumped from main page

Like flood protection? That also sounds good. You know you can enable in your settings to view a certain amount of therads on one page?

Only thing I would be worried about for something like flood protection would be if you're in OT and a long discussion is going on and you need to reply quickly. I think it would be very hard to have flood protection for just certain forums. I would imagine it would have to be implemented globally rather than just FS/FT.

Yeah but I was wondering how hard it would be to implement a code for that particular forum. Probably not that hard for a lot of the techies on here 🙂

There's a 'bump club' in FS/FT....I have no problem with returning bumps, although they often compete to bump the threads 😕

You're only allowed to reply to your own thread every 4 hours, it's ridiculous to bump threads that have been bumped or replied to only a few minutes ago.

Completely removing postcount has also been suggested.

There doesn't seem to be a clear majority opinion on whether this is even a 'problem' (although I can see it being more of an issue in FS/FT, especially with Fusetalk idiotically dropping the 'sort by post date' option in the latest version...), let alone what to do about it.

when dealing on FS/FT postings mean nothing...its heatware that matters....i dnt care if a guy has 10K psots and has been a member since 2001...im still not shipping first unless he has a decent ammount of heat. Just buy something from purplehippo and that man will bump anything you post regularly (at least thats what i have seen), and making your description and title as acurate as possible will make it so post count or where you are in the lsit not matter.

i think the point is being missed here, my objection is people bumping mutliple threads at a time and moving others threads off the main page where they have better chance of being seen. i know some like myself use the search feature a lot of the time to find stuff i want but some do not. the post count is a byproduct of that.

Wow, maybe something needs to be addressed on this subject. The post I wrote yesterday mentioned about someone who bumped 50 random threads in one hour - I checked back today and ... 250 bumped threads in one afternoon! And I'm sure it was just to get people to check out his own thread in his sig.

Agreed, it is a problem. When I traded more often, I'd bump my friend's threads, but not wantonly. If it was on the first few pages, it did not get bumped.
Most of these guys won't take the time to check, and just bump it irregardless.

I think a PM to the individual culprits would be a better strategy than applying new rules.

The problem I see is, you can't enforce a general rule in the For Sale/For Trade forum because each situation is too specific to compare to the next. PurpleHippo bumps over 20 threads in a span of 5 minutes, but those bumps , IMO, are well deserved and welcomed by most. To implement a rule where he can only bump so many threads within a period of time would take away his sign of appreciation for bumping his thread.

I understand that your intent is to get rid of those who bump threads frivilously with no rhyme or reason, but to punish everyone for a few individual's actions is silly. That's why the only solution I see is to PM a mod or the alleged culprits themselves and tell them to tone it down.

I generally bump threads for people whom I had a good transaction with in the past, or threads that have good deals in them. I bump about 10 threads per day, but in a span of 3 minutes. Now those 10 bumps can be construed as frivilous bumps, but they are well deserved in my opinion as these people have been great traders.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, this is something that has to be dealt with on a case to case basis.

What does bumping a thread do anyways? i have never done it, ive seen it done. haha. This is one new person who will not be doing fifty random bumps in an hour.

Everytime someone replies to a thread, it gets moved to the front page on top of older threads.

BUMP = Bring up my post. People write bump in their threads to bring up their post to the front page.

Hence, the purpose of this thread. It's seemingly controversial to bump threads for no reason as it pushes other peoples' threads lower on the first page and out of view of potential customers looking to buy or sell their items.

If off topic posts didnt count, I would have about three posts. 🙁

yeah, wtf is that? he just bumped like 30 threads :| i PM'd him but if i was a mod it would be a vacation.

edit- he says he understands

thats 28 posts a day..incredible.
I thought my 13 posts a day was incredible!!
I bow and pay my allegiance to that one little word--BUMP!!

i hope a mod is watching this thread and he starts talking to other mods and they do something about it. i think the flood protection idea mentioned would be the best option.

he is still at it today, Average Posts Per Day: 28.44 he is climbing to 29 at a good clip, now has 711 posts. hopefully something will come of this
