I woke up Wednesday morning to find that my Generic Host Process had crashed giving me the generic Windows error message. I didn't think much of it until I restarted my computer.
Now, whenever the system boots into windows, it will briefly connect to my wireless network (I use a USB adapter), then immediately disconnect (it literally stays connected for a fraction of a second... just enough for my widget to download the weather). If I go into the connection settings, the "Time Connected" clock is stuck at zero.
Now, I wouldn't think much of it because USB wireless adapters are notoriously unstable, but another thing also happened. My system was playing Windows sounds just fine (startup sound, dialog box tones, etc.), but when I opened iTunes, no sound would come out. Same with WMP. I tried to open the sound control panel and it told me that there was no sound card installed!?! I checked in the Device Manager and it has my integrated sound listed (built into the mobo), but the sound mixer says no audio playback or recording devices were found!
Is my computer about to bite the dust? My wireless is all wonky, and my integrated sound has apparently decided to tell me its not there, but still likes to play Windows sounds, yet nothing else. I reformated in the beginning of January so I have no idea why it's acting up like this... like I said, I went to bed the other night and it was fine, then I woke up the next morning and everything went to hell.
Any ideas?
p.s. I tried system restore to a number of different points and Windows failed to revert my system to ANY of the available restore points.
