multiple RAM usage

If there are 3 sticks of 128 MB RAM in the computer, and for the moment the computer uses only about 100 MB memory, which one does it use? I mean, does it use all 3 sticks a little, or does it use only 1 stick and the other two don't do anything? And, is there any preference among 3 (or 4) DIMM slots, or are they all treated equally? Thanks.
