Multiple Monitor Support

I've got a customer who's looking for a new pc rig, however he's a stock trader. His current setup has 6 lcd monitors hooked up to a single dual p3 xeon machine. The objective is to build him a new system, but still use all 6 of his lcd's. I've seen dual monitor support video cards, but I wouldn't know where to begin for 6 monitor support.

Look at Matrox's special solutions for exactly that market niche. They have cards that do four (identical) DVI LCDs.

But why not inherit the graphics solution that's already there? These people couldn't care less about graphics performance - as long as they're getting a clear picture on all their monitors.

yeah i dont think you'll find anything Nv or Ati related that'll do what you want

1) try to inherit the previous hardware
2) if the new computer makes the old graphics card in-compatible (ie AGP->PCI-E) then boogie on down to matrox

really? wow. is it possible to combine two matrox specialty cards via like SLI or something?

the quadro nvs-400 supports 4 monitors. grab that and another dual card.

Yes, but how do I link the two to make a total out combined of 6?

if you dont sli them, which you couldnt you will see 6 monitors in display settings.

scrutinize the present setup.
what's in the box now? odds are it's software that's managing these monitors.
PCI video card solution should work, too.

(I also agree you should try to just migrate the present solution to the new box)

Yeah, that's what I'm probably going to have to do. It's probably a PCI setup in there. He's got dual p3 xeons in that thing on Win2k

Yep, 3 dual head PCI cards is the easy way to get 6 monitors, that is probably what the guy already has and I doubt he would need anything other than that. I can't see any reason to look into Quadros; thoese are for 3d design, not watching stocks.

Also, SLI and such is flor using the power of multiple videocards to drive one display, there is no reason to worry about linking videocards together for driving multiple displays.

Are there special adaptors I would need to also get for him too?

are they dvi or analog? either way cards come with adaptors.

i see. it's kind of weird looking though when i glanced at the back, because I see 2 huge adaptors comming from 2 cards producing 6 monitor output. looks like it had like 3 x 2 connectors each.

i just checked the pny version. it comes with the vga converters, if they are dvi it doesnt come with it.
