Welcome.

Well, without telling us what criteria you have for a "decent" mainboard, it'll be pretty hard to recommend you something.

You can't put two regular Athlon 64s in one system. You could either buy into QuadFX, such as the parts in your second post, or you could go with something from the Opteron 2xx series on Socket 940 or Socket F.

Why AMD FX70? Why not get a 965 board and run a Kentsfield quad core (single CPU, 4 cores). It will be much much cheaper (e.g. $150-200US for a good board and $700-1000 for a CPU). Does AMD's memory/bus arcitecture provide better performance in modelling?

A QX6700 with an Abit Quad GT or Asus Commando would suit your needs perfectly. A QX6700 at stock performs equal or better than two 3ghz FX74s, and with a large tower cooler, most QX6700s will overclock to 3.4ghz and beyond. 99% of all dual CPU boards are total garbage for enthusiasts, anyways.

Another thing to consider is the fact that a single quad core processor will use much less power than a pair of dual cores. The QX6700 will be easier on your power bill if you leave your PC on overnight to render large scenes or something.

If you wait about a Month you can also get the Quad core for a lot less than what they are going for now.
