Multiple connection problems

I have several internet connection problems with my new computer. I'm connected through a router and am using earthlink provider. I am able to surf the internet and play some games like battlefield 1942. Some games however don?t seem to detect my connection and tell me I cannot play, games like rise of nations. Also I noticed that very few auto updates work on my computer, they all tell me the same thing, "cannot verify connection to internet? Also when I use Microsoft outlook, I cannot receive emails. I can send, but it won?t let me receive. I have tinkered with settings, to no avail. I've even compared it side by side to another computer what it would run on.

Can anyone help with these problems? Thanks.
