Multiplayer Sim City?

My friend and I are huge fans of Sim City 4 and love playing it but we have always wanted to be able to play "together" either in the same city or linking cities and them updating in real time.

Is there a Sim City game like this (or a similar "sim" type city game) or a mod for SC? Anyone know?
 
Simcity 4 was suppose to have built in multiplayer but they basically scrapped it and made some type of city share thing on their site.

I would like to see it as well.
