Hello,
Family recently started playing games online and have found it to be very enjoyable. We currently play Halo and CS. We have Farcry and HL2 but don't really use it that much. My question is this...can you recommend any other multiplayer games that we should look into. Some first hand advice would invariable save us a lot of time getting to where we want to get. I have heard of several popular names mention here and there but not sure what is offered insofar as multiplayer.

thanks for the heads up!!!

Lots of people still play Soldier of Fortune 2 online.....it is my alltime fav online FPS and I would guess it can be gotten for cheap. It's got deathmatch, capture the flag, and other modes.

Of course Unreal Tournament 2004...a ton of modes, more arcadey than SoF but also very enjoyable.

Tribes:Vengeance.....under alot of peeps radar screen. I enjoy this one alot too. Truely 3-D playing field as you use a rocket pack to play vertically.

First of all, what genre of games do you enjoy the most? First person shooters? Strategy games? Racing/Sports games? Massive online role playing games?

right. To preemtively answer some of these:

Online real time strategy: Warcraft 3 (+ frozen throne expansion) and warhammer 40,000: dawn of war. Warcraft 3 can be intimidating online, but the matching service has improved a lot and should be able to assign you appropriate challengers most of the time, plus there's a mod for it called defense of the ancients (DoTA) that provides many hours of multiplayer carnage. 40k i dont play, but have heard very good things about it.

First person: Call of Duty is awesome, highly recommended. Unreal tournament 2004 if you prefer more arcadey shooters. If you want to experience ULTRA realism try Red Orchestra mod for UT2k4.

Massive multiplayer rpg: World of warcraft is really the only option for anyone new the the genre. $13-15/month depending on the package you choose. I wont say more, there's plenty of info on this forum about WoW :)

Racing/Sports I dont play these so wouldn't know of any online multiplayer options.

SoF2 is my favorite of all time too, but I recently switched to CS:S simply because I had been playing sof2 since it was just a demo.

Personally I didn't like UT or T:V nearly as much. T:V seemed pretty stupid to me. Everyone flying at 100mph and all your weapons are slow projectiles? Seemed waaaay too hard to get a kill in that game. And after being used to 80 kills in a good map of sof2, 17 kills just made me yawn.

Battlefield 1942 is probably the best multi-player FPS experience. Cheap now and runs well on hardware back to the 8500. Fight on foot or using tanks, jeeps, battleships, destroyers, planes, bombers, APCs, aircraft carriers, submarines, etc. I dislike UT2004's variation on BF1942's capture-and-hold game play. BF1942 also has several free high profile mods like Desert Combat that add variation to the game.

There is nothing....NOTHING in online gaming that matches the sheer and utter satisfaction of running over somebody with a jeep....especially if they happen to have their back turned...but especially if they're running towards a plane...especially if it's two of them racing each other to a plane and you're in one of their team's jeeps....and you have a passenger.

View MMORPGs sort of like a marriage. You're committing to develop your character and build relationships within the game. Whether anybody here will admit it or not it's sort of a mini second life where the enjoyment you get out of the game is less about immediate fun and more about accomplishment within the world of the game. Sounds physchotic, but people do it every facet of life....think the local at the gym who everybody there knows but outside of it he's just the guy with no neck wearing the mauve workout pants......or the girl in the drama club who played Viola in Twelth Night but outside of that group she's just the skinny chick who doesn't wear any make-up.

It's like Cheers...making your way in the world today takes everything you've got...taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot...wouldn't you like to get away...sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name...and they're always glad you came.
