Multiplayer games you wish more people played?

The Ship: You are given the name of someone that you must hunt down and kill and you also have someone hunting after you that you must avoid. Every player is given an alias so you don't know who each other is. You can also get arrested if a civilian catches you attacking another player or if you try to attack someone who is in a secure zone.

It's a really fun game because you must always be vigilant or on your guard. You never know if the guy following you is following you because he wants to kill you or because you both just happen to be going to the same place.

But of course no body plays it(or they only play deathmatch) so that makes me sad. It's also extremely vulnerable to griefers since people can kill each other if they were not assigned that person.

so what are the games you wish more people played?

The Ship--I've never heard of that game. How old is it?

My picks:

Unreal Tournament 1999
--the original and still the best UT game and IMHO the greatest online multiplayer FPS of all time. There's still nothing out there to compare to a game of UT99 capture-the-flag.

Sins of a Solar Empire--A great 4x-RTS hybrid that is enjoyable for people who want to play online multiplayer PvP but don't want to play an APM-based clickfest like Starcraft. For some reason most of the people who play it only play it offline against AI or online against AI.

Oh good pick on Unreal Tournament. Sadly I only started playing it after its golden days so I never got to experience its full glory.

Apparently the Ship was released in 2006 but it started as a Half-Life mod and I have no idea how old that is. It's kinda an obscure game so I don't blame you for never having heard of it. I discovered it after they had a free weekend for it on steam.

Hmmm... good question.

I'd say... perhaps some of the older Total War games. Such as Rome and Medieval II. Their respective on-line modes are almost always empty. And when there's people it's usually no more than maybe 4 or 5 matches going on and when they're done the players whom played those matches just leave and rarely stay for more. I admit though the last time I actually looked for a match in Medieval II it was probably two years ago (but even then it was just as bad as I describe it, today it might be worse). There's usually "just enough" people around playing many on-line games but in terms of large and very active community it's often just limited by the "latest" on-line games. I've re-installed Battlefield Bad Company 2 recently and played it just yesterday, on-line, and despite a perhaps reduced number of players whom probably switched to BF3 instead I'd say that there's still a good number of players around for it. I'm not sure how BF2 or BF1942 are doing to this day though, BF2 is most likely still active enough.

The one game I know I would play on-line much more often (or, playing on-line at all by now) if there were significantly more players caring for it is WH40K Dark Crusade (or at worst, perhaps even Soulstorm). Unfortunately most WH40K players whom happened to be active on-line in the original games (Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, Soulstorm) moved over to WH40K II as soon as it hit the market. At least I do play some Last Stand every once in a while but I really just don't like the regular skirmishes that much, the removal of base building wasn't for me (I understand why it works for some though, point being that even though I understand I still don't like it). Anyway, I'd also like to say that I agree concerning Unreal Tournament (99), I would honestly play that one to this day if people wouldn't mind, but apparently they do. But it's understandable of course, people move to new games over time, or at least move to the sequels and usually leave the previous title(s) behind at some point. In most cases it is understandable since, more often than not, the sequel(s)'s on-line modes are refined, more detailed, have more modes or... well are often just better in terms of features (but of course the game-play itself overall can sometimes just be worst than the previous games).

I guess it's part of the cycle heh.

If you want to try out the ship I would recommend trying out the Assassins Creed multiplayer if you own an assassins creed game (after 2), as it is based off the same thing.

We should set up a "The Ship" game night for AT forum members. I have it in my Steam library but haven't actually played it. Based on the premise, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Quake 2 was the bomb back in the day.

Also Diablo 1 was probably the best multi player experience due to its originality at the time.

But, I'd probably have to pick Halo 2. So many awesome days + nights with the guys just talking smack to everyone and kicking ass. It is the only halo that got gameplay right... movement speed, aiming, hits, maps (although some maps weren't the greatest), competitiveness for the vehicles, etc.

I use to play The Ship as well but stopped playing when there was only around 1 populated server going. Apparently, there is a kickstarter for The Ship 2.

I have good memories of 'The Ship' in LAN, playing against bots and a single PC.

I never imagined I could have had so much fun impersonating bots, complete with their glitchy pathfinding, trying to induce paranoia to my buddy once I discovered which character he was playing, while completely negating my objective.

The team fortress mode where you protect the VIP, it was always funny to see the VIP running around with the umbrella.

Natural Selection 2

IDK why but the community died out pretty hard after a month and a half. There's no good servers to play in now. :(

Natural Selection 2

IDK why but the community died out pretty hard after a month and a half. There's no good servers to play in now. :(

I felt it could happen (lack of players for NS2). I told myself I would wait to buy it after its release, which I did. I really want it but I have yet to buy it. I've looked at its still-recent updates history and they (the devs) seemed to have struggled (at least during the first month or so) to balance both factions. I don't know what's the "consensus" right now about the general game's balance though, maybe it's better now than it was earlier.

The other problem is... well maybe that's just my perception but NS2 just comes out too late after NS1. I think that's part of the problem too. Too much time passed in between both releases and too many players "forgot about it" or just couldn't care about the sequel anymore and moved on. Had NS2 been released a few years ago and at that point had it been taken more seriously by a known publisher for its potential, then perhaps the name Natural Selection itself would have become a good selling factor by now.

But... maybe not, who knows what "could have" happened. It's disappointing anyhow, I still want NS2 but if there's a significant lack of players to fill up enough servers, or if I'd be lucky to find filled up games and could only find enough people during week-ends then... yeah I wouldn't bother that much (I mean even if I owned it, I wouldn't bother much about launching it to start with to try finding games if I know I wouldn't be able to anyway).

I have over 200 hours into the game and I also played NS1. The game is just great. There is no reason not to buy it. There are quite a few servers.. only issue for me is sometimes it wont show a lot in the list then the next day there will be 50+ with people on. With the steam sales there are a lot of people now.

Now a lot of n00bs play the game and then whine that marines are over powered but imo aliens are slightly op. It just goes to show you that it is quite balanced.. it just really depends on the skill of the commander and whether the team listens or not.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine

not sure if its still alive but last time i tried to play it i couldnt find a game, unless it was TDM. And there are some DLC with maps and modes that kinda divided the community between people with the dlc and people without

the MP in that game is so fun

Don't get me wrong, it needs some polish. A lot of polish. However, I have had more fun with this FPS then recent others. If you look at this game as a serious FPS such as BF3 then you won't like it. If you take it in stride like TF2 then you'll probably love it. They just had a free weekend so I hope people bought. It's worth the sale price imo.
