multicast video...

I've read up on the setup, as far as the theory and router commands...pretty straight forward. My question, what software should I use to cast the stream? Are there any free ones out there? I know of Cisco IPTV, NetShow...any others?

microsoft media server, pretty good.

Make sure you plan out your addressing and how you are going to do the multicast routing. Also different models of switches use different ways of handling multicast so make sure you understand the implications. If not you could wind up flooding every port with multicast traffic, every stream.

Also if you're going across a wan and have different quality streams you can control this on the routers to prevent low speed users from joining the streams. Don't want that 2 Mbs stream going down a T1.

use the 239.x.x.x which is the range for private multicast (similar to RFC1918 10.x.x.x addresses)
