Multi-threading... Moding AMD XPs or BUST?

Hello,

This is the fist time I have attempted to multi-process; and, I'm looking for a better, more effective way to multi-thread; while spending the least amount of money. I was looking into moding two AMD 2400+ and throwing them on a Micro Star or Gigabyte motherboard. However, I want the speed of the high AMD MPs.

Any suggestions on other CPU/motherboard configurations that aren't AMD or Pentium, but just as good, if not better?

Try Dual Mobile Bartons in a dual board.

Apparently the mobile bartons only require minor modding to be used in SMP. I believe if you search on this fact, there is quite some information here. Mingon I think... has his dual barton rig going at 2.3ghz or so on both chips.

Actually, the mobile Bartons require absolutely NO modding to be used in an SMP setup. Plus, yeah, they overclock extremely well.😀
 
They do need some modding, the 3rd lvl 5 bridge needs to be cut (otherwise some boards only run them at 600mhz - lowest powernow setting), then the multiplier needs to be set, I use a conductive pen on the pins of the cpu its v.easy

Mingon, do have a good website in mind that explains the moding steps on the Dual Bartons? I'm confident this rig will be solid.

Any suggestions on where to go to make the purchase? Expect for the motherboard, power supply and ram, the rest I can salvage from my old rig.

this is for standard barton - mp this is for modding the pins if you look at page 3 of the linked article it shows the bridges for modding to smp. The first picture shows how to mod an athlon xp, with the mobile chips the 4th and 3rd are already joined (where 4th is on left painted in pic) the 3rd tells the motherboard that it is a mobile chip, the 4th that it is SMP capable. You need to cut the 3rd as some boards dislike mobile cpu's. I would go for a decent name psu of 400-450 watts (just in case) ram can be upto 512mb of normally ddr (2 x 256). I am UK based so cant tell you where is best to get stuff
