Multi GPU or not... wait for DDR3?

I'll be building a new system in Q4 2006 - Q1 2007 time frame and I really need to know if SLI or CrossFire is a good option. I'm current running a quite warm (understatement) Prescott which was bought 3 years ago and because of this I fear heat.

I'll be upgrading minimally to a Conroe E6600 with the intention to eventually have a Kentsfield once it becomes reasonably priced. Of course, I could simply buy a Pentium D 805 and overclock it with my Zalman CNPS9500 for the interim, instead of buying an E6600 initially.

My question is this: should I build my system in order to accomodate SLI or CrossFire technology? I currently have a newly bought Phantom 500 PSU and an Antec P180B case because I want my new system to be cool and quiet, but I want good performance too. I can't go insane price-wise.

There's also another problem: DDR3. From what I've read it'll blow DDR2 out of the sky - not that it's that high up there anyway. In any case, it'll probably mean that my Processor/MoBo will have to be replaced to run with DDR3. I've heard that DDR3 could be available as early as Q2 2007, meaning my system will have to be scrapped.

Sorry if the post is a little long, thanks for any advice.

What kind of monitor do you have/want? Anything under a 1680x1050 won't need a dual gpu solution. A good single card pc will be great. Trust me, I've seen posts that are painfully long. This isn't long. Welcome to the Forums!:D

couldn't have said it better myself!

Yeah my 7800GT chokes up at 1680x1050, if you have that or higher I do reccomend dual gpu. Trust me, F.E.A.R. at 12FPS is quite unplayable :(

I'm thinking of a x1900xt on a 215TW or vx2025, I think I'll be set. I've been told I'll be able to be close to maxing out the settings on that res.

I suppose you're right. It's difficult to know what you need when all the reviews are supposing you run games at insane resolutions.
