Muhammad Ali's Chipset!

Research

Everytime I come across a deal for USB product ... some deal-crapper warns all the readers of the dreaded ALI chipset ... I do not understand what's the problem with it ...

Can you guys comment on that?

I'm not sure I understand your question. do you mean people are telling you not to use USB devices with an ALi chipset?

Yes. Many people recommend running away from the ALI chipset ... Is it that bad?

I guess your reffering the ALI USB to IDE bridge or something on those lines? I've not heard many isuses myself, maybe you should quote them next time and ask for some evidence?

This is one example post for the usb 2 PCI card:

I noticed that this card uses the Ali chipset. I have read in other posts where people had trouble with this one. So I'll recommend one with via chipset

This one is an example for an external usb enclosure post:

This is a widespread, generic design - most commonly seen under the Bytecc brand name. It uses the ALi chipset, which many aren't a fan of. But the higher number of problem reports may be just due to the ALi chipset being more prevalent. It's cheap - it goes into cheap enclosures.

Does these excerpts help clarify my issue?

Thanks!

I had an old ALI chipset on an ECS mobo which both sucked really bad. My problem was usually software related and could've been fixed through patches but the patches were never made:frown:

I wonder if ALi is any good right now. That is like al you say saying VIA is trash. IMO they have greatly improved and I think they have been very good since the KT333 because they are stable as hell~ maybe not the fastest...but stable.
I remember ALi anoucning they were going to create chipsets for the A64~ I wonder if anything has come from that as of late and I'd like to see the quality because people for some reason don't realize that what was true in the past isn't true today.
