The GTX 280 is starting to feel the strain a little at 2560x1600. I am tempted for a new GPU but i don't want to slam 350 notes down on a card and find out some next gen high end kit comes out at the end of July.

Worth an upgrade?

Or should i wait a couple of months and see where we are at?

If you have an SLI board, I'd get another 280. If you don't, why the heck don't you when you have a 30" monitor? :D

I have an SLI board but i dont want two video cards with my current power supply. It does not have enough PCI-E power cables and i don't want to trail molex adapters everywhere. Too messy :D

Which next gen kit Eureka? nVidia or ATI or both?

All rumours are pointing to ATI being out first with the next gen cards (at or slightly before the Windows 7 launch in October), probably followed about a month or two later by Nv. I'd wait, all you'd do is buy a 295 now for a high price, only to read launch day reviews of how awesome the new cards are and see the price of a 295 plummet accordingly- hence regretting your decision to buy.

Cheers for the info fella's.

I will wait a few months and aim to upgrade my PSU and drop two next gen cards into my mobo :)

You have all that headroom, a ready set mobo, 280's on the cheap, best ever SLI scaling, and top of the food chain performance. Why let a psu hold you back? Be done with it. Come DX11 time, sell the 280's for $175ish and put towards next gen. PSU square for at least 3 years if you buy right..

Yes. New PSU. Overclocked i7. I'd also look at getting a second 280 for the meantime (next 5 months) if you're struggling on the 30"

double or triple GTX380's or Double 5870's. (Possibly quad 5870's depending on next-gen crossfire scaling)

I did it, only because I had an EVGA board and they allowed me to do their "Step-up" program for $100, so it only cost me like $400 total. But that was like 4mos ago. At this point I probably wouldn't bother, and neither would I bother getting a 2nd board.

Sell the 280 for $200 buy a pair of 260's for $320 and a good PS for $100, like Corsair 1000 HX. It will cost you $220-cheaper than upgrading to a 295. Sell the 260's for $200 this fall when G300 drops and you got a new PS for $20 and 4 months of great gaming. What are you waiting for? :)

Hes going to sell the 260s in the fall for the same he sells a 280 for now....hmm....

1000w PSU is a waste.

If he was going to SLi, *another* GTX 280 would make the most sense
.. for about $200 :p

a good 600w PS would handle them

i have TriFire with a 850w PS and i trail molex adapters everywhere

The OP could buy a SECOND new 450-500w PS with all the new connectors to use in tandem with his current PS
- JUST dedicated for the SLI'd 280s PCIe

The other guy meant sell BOTH 260s for the same as he sells his 280 now...

No, it should be $20. The original math is right.

Its all irrelevant as i am British and i work in pounds. You guys pay less for hardware:

A Corsair HX 1000 costs £169.17 ($278.30)
Cheapest GTX 280 same brand as my current 280 (yes i am superficial like that) costs £209.99 ($345.45)
Add a tenner for delivery

Total: £389.16 ($640.25)

I could buy a GTX 295 and sell my GTX 280. I don't have to upgrade my PSU and i should get near or equivalent performance from two 260's. I can also sell my GTX 280, which is what i would be doing anyway if i was to go the twin 260 route:

Sell GTX 280 -£150 ($245.77)
Purchase GTX 295 £349.99 ($575.80)

Total: £199.99 ($329.05)

Going two GTX 280's would have the advantage in speed, but then i have to buy a PSU and i don't get no return for my existing 280. The cost is high for maybe 6 months of gaming. If the other thread with release date rumours are true, then it would be more economical for me to buy the 295 for near enough the same performance.

I have really answered my own question. Now i have to decide weather i can live with the GTX 280 for 6 months or go ahead and drop the money on a 295.

Cheers for the input though its appreciated. Its always good to get other peoples thoughts.

What IS your current power supply? There aren't many that CAN support a 295 but CAN'T support 2x280 at the same time...
