I'm not sure how many of you saw this past week's True Life which showed the lives of three people suffering from tourette syndrome. One person in particular broke my heart. Alyssa, a girl from California, has very bad tourettes. She is often in pain because of the involuntary movements. She makes loud noises as well.

It broke my heart to see her go through it all and then go to that special type of surgery only to have it not work.

It also opened my eyes and made me realize how lucky I am and how lucky a lot of people are and that we take a lot of things for granted. We shouldn't.

My prayers are with her and her family. I pray one day that there will be a cure for tourettes.

Tourette's is hard for the people who have it and for parents raising a kid with it, even when it's one of the less spectacular cases where most people don't even know the person has it.

channel 4 here in the UK showed a program about kids with tourettes and they all went off to the US to a tourettes camp

it was quite sad when the kids where interviewed individually, but when filmed together it was actually quite funny to watch and because they all had tourettes and were all together they didnt seem to care.

felt particularly bad for one girl who just blurts out the first thing on her mind. sees a fat person she shouts fat or fatty, see's a coloured person and she shouts N*gger.

she did it in a shop where there was a black shop assisstant at the till, and i was just like "****** me how embarrasing for the mother!" but the woman behind the till was one of the few that understood perfectly it wasnt her fault. that was pretty good.

60 minutes a few yrs ago did a segment on a guy w/Tourettes. he was cursing, and there were lots of bleeps. he also has lots of involuntary arm movements. people around him (ie: diner) moved away from him like he was a pariah.

but He was happy. He accepted it, and got on with life.

I caught it (I'm 29, not a teen watching MTV, just channel surfing and caught it) and I felt the exact same way. It's sad because you look at that girl and think she's very beautiful but her disease cripples her socially. If I had what these kids had I don't know that I could find the courage to cope with it and go out into the world.

I felt especially bad for her when she had that attack at Disneyworld and her supposedly "understanding" friends somewhat turned on her. Mind you they got pushed, but I think to befriend someone with that disease or truly care for them you'd have to have an infinite well of patience.

The girl Alyssa really got to me because she looked and acted like someone I know (during her normal spells) so it was kinda weird to see that transition.

The one guy who was a comedian was pretty funny, but you know he only made fun of himself as a defense mechanism. When he went out on that date and it was a disaster it made me really appreciate what I have in a normal life.

Also, the fiance of that biker "Twitch"....OMG was she smoking. That kid looked like he had some money. I didn't feel quite as bad for him ;).

I've read up on Tourette's a lot and they say that the verbal tics like those are outbursts of things they don't believe in, the opposite of their true beliefs. The racist outbursts actually come out of people who are not in the least racist.

I totally wanted to see twitchles. The first time I heard him on the radio, I nearly got into an accident, I was laughing so damn hard. He's a good sport about it, and he is definitely not faking.

Ehhhhhwwwwww.....Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring!

But ya, having tourettes must suck.

Twitches was clearly nervous on the opie and anthony show. you could see him get worse the more nervous he got. it almost got to the point where i thought he was playing it up for the sake of comedy and then you realize "this cat ain't faking it".

Ya, there is no way he is faking it. Did they actually show him on the O&A show in true life?

Why do they make him jump around?

Heh, cause they can? Apparently, if he hears the word jump, he has to. So they'll be talking, and out of nowhere start saying "jump jump jump", and he just can't help himself.

Sure, its a bit cruel, in a way. But he knows what he's getting into, and I suppose he's trying to make the best of his disability. But he's still actually pretty funny even without the tourettes...its just a gimmick.
