Once they started showing Rap videos the station went downhill fast. Now it is nothing more that Ghetto TV and doesn't even deserve a slot in most cable channel selections.

I don't know, but to me, this comment just seems to be racially motivated. Excuse me if I'm wrong though. I'm assuming, here.

Hrm... I don't really think so. It's not really fair to assume that just because somebody is trashing rap music means they are also trashing an entire race. I personally don't really care for rap... at least i don't have a lot of respect for it, but this isn't based on race at all. I find rap music to lack meaning and intelligence... whether it's Eminem or Nelly doesn't matter.

The majority of rap songs seem focused around sex, violence, and money... and I just have a hard time respecting this. While there are some, few rap songs address world issues or even common personal issues. The reason why I like bands like Nirvana (as i mentioned in my orginal post) and a lot of other original alternative/rock bands is because they address issues that people can relate to. In fact, most of Nirvana's music has layer upon layer of deeper meaning... you just don't see that in today's hip-hop. (And before you hop onto the argument that Kurt Cobain was a heroin-addicted lunatic... which he was... think about that last statement again... all of his music didn't mean what it was presented as). I don't know... i guess i'm just partial to music that makes you think and gives you a better appreciation for the world around you. And I guess i just don't want to hear about a bunch of unintelligent rap "musicians" singing about their money, "hoes," and violence.

I guess the big difference between the people that appreciate the majority of rap music and those who loathe it, is that the first group is just listening to the music because it's catchy and can, on occasion sound cool, while the second group is considering it's affect on it's youth listeners and the general purpose behind it. Not saying one is better than the other... just saying i personally prefer different music.

Finally, I respect you for not getting pissed off and handling the situation immaturely when you took that as a racial comment, regardless of whether or not it should have been taken that way. It's nice to see somebody around here willing to recognize they may not always be right :)

I don't watch MTV much at all. I do watch VH1 some and CMT. There are some songs I hear on the radio and I would like to see the video for, but I just can't get into MTV that much.

I do like pop music - well some of it. There are a couple rap songs I like, but I dislike the majority of them. When I listen to music the main thing I am interested in is the performance of the lead vocalist. I love music where the artist has a super vioce. I have also noticed that country has changed over the years and I find that I can get more into country songs now. I also find that most country music has decent vocal performance. Or that the vocals are more center stage.

Yeah I am older now. I remember the only chance I used to get to see music videos was on Friday Night Videos on regular tv.

I think MTV is all about making money and less about showcasing art.

Thanks for the respect.
Perhaps this is just backlash from me being sick and tired of people blaming everything (not literally) on rap music. I have been a devout hip hop hippie for about a decade now and I personally do not believe that it has affected me, or anybody I know in any adverse manner. In fact, I believe that rap and hip hop foster creativity and awareness of culture, but that's just me. And just as you say Kurt Cobain's music did not really mean what it was presented as, I believe the same goes for rap, although I do believe that a lot of the glamourization of money, sex, and violence is "as is." But unfortunately, that's what sells in todays society, therefore that's what is being played on the radio and on MTV. I don't necessarily believe it's MTV's fault, they are just a business entity in it for profit. If anything, blame the decline in societal standards, not the bi-product of our capitalistic ways.

Ugh. I can't stand MTV. Shouldn't they just rename it CTV? Crap-TV, there is no music on it anymore anyway. Last time I watched it I made a mental note to never ever ever let my future kids watch it... or at least show them why it's drivel. I guess I'm too old for their target audience (I'm 18 and they seem to target 12 year olds), but still... it's awful.

Even beyond MTV our country is in a lot of trouble. Christ, I had to deal with a friends little sister for a few days. First I talked to her on AIM because she wanted to talk to someone mature (and my friend was a dick so he gave her my SN). I couldn't understand 1/2 the crap she was typing. Every other word wasn't a word and every other letter was capitalized. Then my friend and I had to pick her and her friends up from the mall. Holy crap. Shoot me. They are 12 years old and dress more provocitively than my girlfriend! All they talked about were guys and sex stuff like that. I seriously couldn't believe it.

MTV definately doesn't help our society any, but we also can't blame it completely. Irresponsible parents, etc have a lot do with it as well.

oh dear.

You are a dumb sack of shyt... He didn't say anything about race, he said MTV is contributing to the rotting of society. I agree with him and I listen to hip hop, jazz and world music. MTV is force fed culture brewed up in Hollywood to attract unsuspecting youngsters who are trying to develop some kind of image based on a role model. In this, kids forfeit their hand at creating a real american culture. :| Blah

I couldn't agree more, I've been thinking alot lately about mtv and other pop culture. Sure I'm abit older now then I was when MTV was first on the air (I was 5 when it premiered IIRC), but it's turned into pure drivel. If you don't think Real World/Road Rules/Battle Of Sexes blah blah isn't scripted, then you must also think WWF/other wrestling is real. Some of their vj's can't speak proper english, instead they have to talk in some form of dialect that's hot with the streets. They also glorify alot of people that have absolutely no morals and lead a terrible lifestyle, i.e. 50 Cent, Eminem, Biggy, etc. etc. They think punk is Good Charlotte, come on now, those guys look like overgrown band wagon'eers, I was so pissed off that Mike Watt showed up in the jury box on that video, it's good he sticks with the community, but to support that band was abit shoddy for a man like him. It's just pure absolute mindless drivel for people who want to conform to what's cool/hot in society with music/movies/entertainment. If part of my generation really think's that mtv is giving us great music/entertainment, then I'm really scared about conformity and how sickening it is that the sheep are flocking to this corporate crap.
