MTV started to suck when stuff like "Yo! MTV raps" and Liquid television left. Seems like it's always been pop culture though, which is why it's different. Pop culture changes.

I think they should show more videos and have less TRL kind of stuff. Show the whole thing man. All of the video.

Oh well, I don't watch TV (except for Nova, Good Eats, and sports).

MTV sucks. They never should have gotten rid of Rikki Rachtman or canceled Headbangers Ball. They have shows dedicated to rap all week long every single day, but they couldn't even keep one 3 hour weekly show dedicated to metal? To hell with them. MTV really sucks. Pure and simple.

carson daley is f'n annoying.

daria is stupid.

everything on MTV is like clear channel sh*t now. stupid music.

I like Cribs and the REal World.

I agree.

One time (at band camp) I saw this documentary about how mtv does these focus groups and follow around "typical teens." Its really a sick circle because they try to anticipate the behavior they should depict for their viewers, then the viewers follow that behavior, then they anticipate a new thing. I can't remember the name of the documentary, but it was really eye opening, haven't watched mtv willingly since. Plus, the age group that MTV targets gets younger every year, its like 12 and 13 year olds going out and acting like the things they see on MTV. Seeing 12 and 13 year old freaking eachother at a beach party then adding in that MTV now has got to hook these kids more than they already have by depicting some more outrageous behavior was scary.

The basics of the MTV series always involve gratuitous sex and parties, not really what kids need to have as a frame of reference for their behavior.

MTV ranks here as one of the best TV stations ...

Great informative campaigns, from AIDS to sunburn to consumer rights are geared towards teens and young-adults. Most VJs are inteligent and funny, which attracts public attention.

Sucks to be MTV USA. 😛

If MTV was exactly the same as it was when it started it would be even worse, times change.

Yes, but some things change for the worse.

You just got older.

Not true, it turned to $hit.

Part of it is because you got older. MTV generally appeals to people around ages of 13-22. Some people grow out of it quicker than others, but MTV in at least the past 10 years is pretty much exactly the same except the face of mainstream music has changed.

Unlike most of the posters here I actually remember when MTV started. I remember when they had actual VJ's and played video's.
I can't remember the last time that I watched the current drivel.
The place went right in the toilet when they let the foreigners start running things (kinda like CART racing), and cancelled Head Bangers Ball.

I agree... MTV is crap. I remember days when you could flip on MTV and see a Metallica or Nirvana video. Now you turn on MTV and see "pop-stars" dressed like whores (which must be a GREAT influence on all the pre-teen & teen girls watching MTV... lets teach America's female youth that sex is the only way to get anywhere in life!), and a bunch of trashy hip-hop "stars" that didn't make it out of middle school and are completely out of touch with the real world.

At the same time they try to give themselves a good repuation by running specials on the issues plaguing our nation... like the Matthew Sheppard murder. I watched that, and though it was pretty well done. At the very least somebody somewhere had good intentions with that program, so props to them for that. But MTV can't lead the battle for equality and gay rights in the United States when they are also pushing sex as a product to be sold. Our female youth should not be brought up with the impression that in order to get anywhere in life you have to slut around in skimpy clothes.

I've never been the conservative type, but trash like this needs to go. MTV is half responsible for the rot of society, it's not just a contributer. In addition, parents need to get control of their kids BEFORE they turn into Ms. Whore and Mr. Wannabee Gangbanger. I say F'em is right... F MTV for rotting the minds of America, and F parents who have kids that they are not capable of raising properly.

As an aside, why does today's mainstream music suck so much? Think about it... you've got "hard-rock" bands playing "I'm mad at my dad so i'm going to scream into a microphone and play the same guitar riffs everybody else uses," you've got "rap" groups rapping "i didn't graduate high school, but its ok because i can still get some from slutty ho-bags, and then write songs about it, get rich even though i'm a no talent ass clown, then use my money to buy guns and coke so i can kill myself and everybody around me," you've got "pop stars" singing "i am completely out of touch with reality, but my girlfriend/boyfriend broke up with me so the world is coming to an end," and today's "alternative" is mostly just a cross between today's "hard-rock" and today's "pop." What happened to the days when hard-rock meant metallica, alternative meant Nirvana, rap meant the beastie-boys, and the closest thing to pop was perl jam? The only respectable music right now is coming out of a few decent alternative and hard rock bands (there are maybe 2 or 3 out of the bunch that i consider decent).

Today's typical high school graduate is entering the world of higher education (or their local McDonalds) with a complete lack of knowledge of the happenings of the world around them, and horrible ethics. It's like America is living in its own little dream world of crap. Thank you MTV. Thank you losers like Carson Daly, Nelly, Eminem (Marshal Mathers is a much cooler name if you ask me), Christina, and Britany. Oh, and F Fred Durst for ruining an entire genre of otherwise good music. Hard-rock and alternative were never supposed to be mainstream. Now they are, and look what the result was. You just dont get it fred, do you? The whole beauty of "underground" alternative music was it was totally immune to being ruined by corporate america. Kurt Cobain didn't write music because he wanted to buy a nice house and a fancy car. instead he wrote music because he wanted to, therefor it was good. Today's Sh** sucks.

AND since our whole fricken country is driven by sex and money, nothing will ever change, it will just get progressively worse. frick... now i'm pissed off and depressed. i'm moving to canada. errr.... maybe not canada, maybe like ireland or germany or something. frick it... i'm making an island (yes making), and moving there. AND no MTV will be allowed on my island. EVER.

We watched a similar video in a sociology class. Basically it was about how MTV sort of defines what is cool and dresses it up to sell to youth. They'll find some underground thing, make it mainstream, and then let it cannabilize itself until they find the next cool thing. MTV decides what goes on TRL, kids think they have a say, they go buy the records, and Viacom makes money hand over fist.

ztadmin, I agree with what you are saying. While I never considered Metallica or Nirvana to be underground, I can see where you are coming from. There is still plenty of good music around, you just have to know where to look. The "Underground" is as thriving as ever, but unfortunately most of it goes unrecognized by pop culture. If what used to be alternative and rock is your thing, browse through pitchforkmedia.com or similar places and check out some of the bands. You would be amazed at the stuff out there. Rock most certainly is not dead, it's just hiding away in the corner waiting for people to notice it.

As far as whether or not MTV is the cause of decay in society is a difficult question to answer. Placing sole blame on them is obviously ludicrous, but I do feel that they do their fair share of harm. It is not just MTV, but pop culture in general that seems to be causing it. MTV is just tool to get it across, much the same way that most radiostations are. Everyone is so absorbed in being cool and trying to idolize what they see is glamorous that they do not even pay attention to the actual artistic side of things, rather they want something to fill their ears so they don't have to think about anything. A solution seems near impossible, but I believe that promoting art (in any form) at an early age and keep at it all the way through school. The more kids play instruments, the more they draw, write, paint, sculpt, and just think creatively in general, the more they will realize what utter garbage pop culture is and how void it is of any real content.

That's why I got rid of cable..among other reasons. It should be a pay channel like the rest of the porno junk. And not included in any of the packages as standard fare.
