MTP loads file lists slowly?

I know we're all proponents of drag and drop here and not for managed solutions, but MTP has me thinking that drag and drop is really hindered. While it's a one stop plugin and the old usb storage required me to hit some buttons on my phone, that's only a minor inconvenience.

I find that with a folder of 200 photos, it can take ages just to load. Or even a list of songs it can take a while.

Any ways to deal with this effectively?

I mean there might be some other benefits I'm not seeing but for most users like us I'd say it was a step back to go to MTP away from usb mass storage.

i use droid explorer, which uses adb to communicate in the backend. much faster than MTP.

This. I see lots of people who think MTP is a godsend but I'm not seeing it for the same reasons you pointed out. I have thousands of photos and music files on my phone and everytime I plug my phone in to update something in one of those directories, it takes FOREVER for the file lists to load. I honestly don't see ANY benefits to MTP over the tried and true drag and drop USB mass storage.

the benefit is that the internal memory can be one contiguous blob, which means that you don't have to worry about "app partitions" and "storage partitions" anymore. no more 16gb phone with only 2gb free for apps. personally I wish there was a way, even if only in recovery, to mount the whole thing as mass storage.

Wonder if it's possible on the SGS4 to have the SD Card show up as USB Mass Transfer? I think that would be a good compromise. Have the 16GB onboard storage be MTP and carry all my app data. But for quick access to photos and music, which should be stored on the SD card anyway, it'd be nice to have that in a faster usb mass transfer.

I do not know. On my GS2 which was hacked to have MTP or Mass Transfer it's one or the other. You can't split the internal and external storage to have two different transfer protocols. That's why I did not know if that was possible, but at least such a solution would allow us to have the best of both worlds. The continuous storage internally along with easy drag/drop/folder view in Windows for the SD card.
