I'm getting back into Magic: The Gathering.

I see boosters and tournament packs for sale.

What's the difference? And which is better to get?

I use to be into MTG. I loved that game back in hs. Then they started pumping out a new series, for what seemed to be every month. Too expensive to keep up and had to keep reading the other players card since I wasn't familiar with the new cards. Just ended up selling my whole lot to another kid.

Boosters is basically JUST the cards you would want. "Tournament" pack is going to include a pre-made deck, giving you more rares (but usually the crappy ones) as well as land. Personally, I only buy boosters.

Well I did when I played. The other thing to do which is much more practical. Read about all the cards in a particular expansion, find the ones you want and then buy all of them online.

I don't know if This Place has as good a deals as they used to, but I would buy all of the common's and uncommons from there as a set, and then go and get the rares places like there or the auction site which was like www.mtgauction.com or something, as well as some of the eBay stores where you can buy 4x of any rares you want. Much more practical, and you save A LOT of money getting EXACTLY what you need vs playing the game of chance.

Edit: now that I think about it, yeah, they still do, but only for standalone expansions, I believe.
Anyway, as I remember tourney packs have 60 cards....I believe 3 random rares, I think it's 12 random uncommons (something like that) , five basic lands of each type from the latest standalone expansion and then the rest are random common cards.
Don't quote me, since the last Tourney pack I bought was from Urza's Legacy.
Tourney packs are good to get when you need basic land. Generally I would just get a tourney pack to start, and they even substitute as deck holders.

Oh, I also remember back when the base set tourney packs used to come with mini-rule books (By the way there is a magic rule that states "Ignore this rule" :laugh;) and select expansion ones came with storybooks. Good times.
