MT: E63 dethrones CTS-V

Most of the performance numbers look identical which is strange considering the Caddy has a better power-weight ratio. This was based on numbers and subjectivity. I doubt the E63 has the balls to time a Nürburgring run for fear of getting demolished.

Don't mind the that the Mercedes cost 35% more than the Caddy.

Does it matter what driver is driving which car?

Edit: I thought E63 was a BMW chassis... wow i feel stupid

SPOILER ALERT

the benz wins on transmission and ride quality (I'm not a dash stroker, so I'm not buying the interior stuff

otherwise, the cars are basically equal. well done to both MB and Caddy!

Agreed times eleventy billion. Even the best Mercedes cars are TERRIBLE on tracks (for their league).

That said, I really doubt than more than 1 owner in a hundred will take them to the track, so 'Ring times are irrelevant in the big picture. As lux boulevard cruisers, they both own serious ass, and both will likely get their tails handed to them by the upcoming 600hp turbo V8 M5.

That M5 will cost a fortune though...

Track times don't matter, the buys never take these cars on to the track anyway...and if they bothered they probably havea track car anyway!

I don't neccessarily agree that track times have no meaning. Although most people definitely won't track a CTS-V, part of the marketing for the car is that it gets time xx:xx on the Nurburgring (or similar). It demonstrates what the car is capable of, which is often times important to people, even though they don't actually plan to ever utilize it. It also demonstrates engineering; the CTS-V flies in the face that Cadillac only makes big land-barges that can't handle. It's a "halo" car of sorts, representing what Cadilliac is capable of.

I'm sure their MCT is faster. But I still favor a manual hands-down.

In the Benz it makes sense though. As the comparo called out, the CTS-V has a stiffer suspension that reminds you you're driving one of the fastest sedans around. The Benz still manages to be comfy - a proper manual would disrupt that.

Benz has always been about cushy ride that happens to be able to drive fast. You want to toss about with a stick you get something else.

Sorry about the link, I read this in my magazine and didn't know they would post the same article online.

Now the question is, if Caddy spent $25k in upgrades, would it beat the E63? Maybe using lightweight exotic materials, dropping the ZR1 engine inside, etc.

Making more power out of the CTS-V is child's play. It would take about 10% of that $25k to smoke the E63 in a straight line and the track. The LSA is basically the LS9 from the ZR1, but with a smaller supercharger and less exotic materials used on the internals.

The suspension would require significant tuning to be as controllable, direct, yet plush like the AMGs.

The transmission is the only "weakness" compared to the AMG. Although I wouldn't want an automatic anyway.

$25k extra and it seems all that the MB can muster over the CTS-V is a 7 speed automatic and a relatively cushy inside.

Well the Caddy's engine is assembled in Mexico and the Mercedes' AMG Engine is handbuilt in Germany. I don't know, but to me, it speaks for itself.

The caddy has an LSx engine...one of the most proven, reliable, and easily maintained high-power V8 powerplants in use right now.

Sounds okay to me?

QFT

One of the reasons I was hesitant to get the Jetta, but VW wised up and has the engine/transmission/drivetrain/crucial bits manufactured in Germany and assembled together in Mexico.

Some people prefer a higher power, lower maintenance, lower cost, dimensionally smaller engine that's easier and cheaper to squeeze more power out of.

Others prefer a far more expensive, bigger, lower power potential engine made in Germany.

Different strokes for different folks.
