Let's say you wanted to go into mechanical engineering. Which school would you rather go into: Milwaukee school of Engineering or U of Illinois-Champaign? I just can't decide which is better for me.

U of Illinos-Champaign... its graduate school programs are top notch and therefore give the entire school a good reputation. I've never heard of Milwaukee School of Engineering...

take a look at their statistics regarding job placement after graduation, tution, accredations to the program you want to take.. and if it boils down to it, if anyone else you know is going. Knowing someone at school always makes it easier to adapt :)

Depends what you are looking for. MSOE has almost no females 10:1 ratio or something. It is a lot more expensive but if you have decent grades on the ACT, you can get quite a few grants and scholarships from the school. I had 3.9GPA in high school and 30 ACT (28 is all you need for really nice scholarships) and msoe grants and scholarships knocked my tuition down more than half. It also has 90% placment rate for graduation seniors with jobs related to their major of choice. There's not much for a social life on campus, but if you are the partying type, there's Marquette and UWM close by for that stuff.

From what I see, UIC has about a 1:1 male:female ratio with a much bigger campus in general. I don't know much else about it though. Since you live in Illinois, UIC would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

hrmm... MSOE is a well known school in the midwist. It's kinda small to be nationally recognized I think, but chicaco.... I'd have thought you'd hear about it around there.

*edit* I can't type.

At UIUC right now. Great school, great campus, great social life. Curriculum is very difficult. Personally I am a Comp Sci major, but know some mechanical engineer's. Both are very difficult. The majority (read over 50%) of engineering majors at UIUC change out of engineering during their stay here.

I have 3 friends who all have internships for the next semester (1 in materials engineering, 2 in civil). Don't know any Mech Engineer's other than freshmen though.
Let me tell you though that everything about UIUC is great. Including the 10mbit connection (UIUC has the fastest semi-public connection in the midwest. According to our bandwidth meter, the entire network does about 1.4TB in bandwidth off-campus every 24 hours. Surprisingly, the network transfers more outgoing (read: uploads) than incoming. I wouldn't even want to imagine what that stat would be if it included the network stats.

Milwaukee who? Exactly.

U of I is great. I'm a junior in Mechanical Engineering there (except I'm taking a semester off and working for Bosch Automotive right now) and can vouch for its awesomeness. It's late, I'm tired, and I'm still kind of drunk. But the school is awesome and you should go there. Wooo!

The only drawback to the UofI is... I live here.

That's right... There goes the neighborhood. :p

We have EE's and ME's from both schools here at work and they all seem to be on the ball. I have my two year and will be going to MSOE to finish up because they have a great night school program. Only other option for me would be Marquette University.

I went to the U of I. For 3 semesters. They weeded me out, so that alone tells me it's a good school. :) When I started ('92), it was the #3 Engineering school in the nation behind Stanford and MIT. I would check US World's Best Colleges magazine to see where it ranks now (but don't base your decision on that). But it's a great school in non-academic aspects too. I was in a frat (D Chi), which definitely contributed to my downfall. Great campus, great bars, and probably a little better weather than Milwaukee.

Yeah, right!

Try to tell people from Texas/ New England what school you went to. You will be asked questions like "Where is this school, again?"

Or even "How big is the school?"
---> This was when I was in a job-hunting mode.
Fortunately for me, there was ONE company whose owner knew how good the school is, anf offered me a job 'just because I was from there' :)

I was in Civil Engg. btw.. :)

Considering UI is in the top 10 in a lot of engineering and sciences in the graduate rankings, you'd have to be an idiot employer not to know about it. A lot of public schools are underrated compare to the private colleges.

That used to be my thinking, too. But esp. in my field, even some of the biggest companies didnt seem to know about the U of I.
And from what I have seen/heard, Civil Engineering firms prefer local candidates, that might be the reason.

-->Atleast it is true in my case: I have a cousin in CT who lives 10 miles from where I work :) I told during my interview that he was my brother. Now my company doesnt even care ;P

MSOE seems to have a lower acceptance rate than UI Urbana Champaign.

I wouldn't particularly worry about that. I went to a top 20 school, and when I get out of the region people don't know much about it. The only people that know about rankings are students and people in academia :) You know you got a good education.

It is surprising though that engineers haven't heard of it though it though...
