MSN Messenger will soon not be working with 3'rd party IM progams, like Trillian...

I know a lot of people love using Trillian, but this is one of the reasons I don't use it.

I never really liked Trillian. I only use AIM, and I like using the normal AIM with AIM+ because everything works flawlessly.

whether you like trillian or not has nothing to do with this. the point is that no third party programs will work on the MSN messenger network. trillian is not the problem.

I think that Microsoft is doing this because a project called Threedegrees from their Netgen division is on its next version in beta. Its basically an addon to MSN that allows you to create groups, and then do stuff with them, including listening to music, sharing photos, and sending animations to each other.

Highly doubtful M$ will succeed. AOL has tried to block Trillian dozens of times without success.

Incorrect. MS is actually working with third party vendors for continued connectivity. There are certain security issues with older logon protocols that need to be closed, and this is just a part of the long road they call "Trustworthy Computing". BTW, Trillian already has a beta released that supports MSNP8 or later protocols.

<chuckle>Incorrect. ThreeDegrees simply utilizes Messenger capabilities...they wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Messenger.
the law is on microsoft's side
<guffaw>Incorrect. Microsoft has been repeatedly sued...and has lost several times, the biggest judgment was just last week. Take the Consent Decree for SP1 as just one other example.

You guys are not reading the articles, and spreading FUD.

I run Messenger and AIM on both of my machines. I hate Trillian.

Trillian = pain in the ass

I agree. My issue with Trillian is that it's buggy, it never checked my emails correctly, and some issues with away/idle time and such. Much more trouble than it was worth. And before you d1cks say "well Trillain Pro is 10x better", why the fvck do I want to pay $25 for an instant messenger program that otherwise, is totally free? No thanks.

Why would it be against the law for Microsoft to secure their own software/networks?

Exactly. I'm using GAIM and anticipate problems. 🙁

Perhaps I took it out of context. Assuming mee987 actually meant "the law is on every company's side", then you would be correct that Microsoft, AOL and everybody else has the law on their sides when locking down their software/networks.

However, in the context of the entire thread, I assumed he meant "no stopping Microsoft." Sorry...

Um, I believe Microsoft can and will be challenged on this in some way shape or form. (Without any research...) I vaguely remember something about AOL doing this several times over to various IM products in the past, and I believe that AOL was forced by the courts to provide interoperability with other clients. I may be remembering some of the details wrong here though, don't quote me.

<edit>
Here:

Hypocrit? Yes, most definitely.

Why in the world do all of you hate Trillian so much? God....

I hated it until recent versions. Have any of you tried it lately? The interface is not buggy any more, all of the features work, it uses less resources than the 5 clients it supports, is skinnable (even tho I don't use that feature), and is generally a good program. Why do you all have such a problem with it??? Geez...

I do agree that Microsoft has a right to secure their own networks. Even though I would personally upset that Trillian wouldn't work on MSN any more... I would get over it in short order. The network admin part of me makes me wonder why Microsoft had not done this sooner. Hopefully the Trillian company can work with Microsoft to keep their service alive.

No reason really. I just decided to hate since everyone else (besides some people in this thread) love it so damn much.
