no need to be a tard about it
did you even read my post?
Yup. And I made it clear that I did...twice. Besides, when there is a topic title like yours, you should expect that someone is going to reply with just as much cynicism...this BBS isn't being hosted by Martha Stewart's website, ya know...
i clearly said msn messenger, not windows messenger, i got rid of that after my last format
You also clearly said you were not allowed to remove it, and you
didn't use quotes the first time...which led me to believe you were running XP, and that the OS itself wouldn't allow an uninstall (which is known behavior). But I also assumed perhaps your girlfriend said "no" (I simply said it in a "colorful" way...). Further, you would be correct that a format gets rid of Windows Messenger...but the
only way to not get it back again is to
not install XP again on that formatted drive.
but she would just uninstall/reinstall and it would be back
Sorry, this part didn't make much sense...naturally, MSN Messenger will be back if you re-install it after uninstalling it,
all software works that way. However, there's a known issue with Windows Messenger (and quite a few other core components in XP and W2K) that auto-repair themselves if the user tries to get rid of them...which further indicates to me (again) into believing perhaps you may actually be talking about Windows Messenger. But now that I know you really
did mean MSN Messenger, I know that it's back again because it was purposely installed again.
Unfortunately, 911 ran into a Windows Messenger problem that affects a minority of users. For most people, using the hack to get rid of Windows Messenger doesn't impact them at all. But as I pointed out in several other threads, a few people will run into problems when they do this. Also 911, Windows Messenger can be hacked off of XP Gold as well...with SP1, you simply have the option to
remove it from the Start menu via Add/Remove Windows Components...it's still installed otherwise.
MSN Messenger does not "launch itself" when logging on to Hotmail. This is something you can actually blame on Hotmail: their API's call Messenger. The reason for this design is that there is a considerable amount of Messenger integration within Hotmail, allowing you to begin IM sessions directly from the Inbox or an open email message, see which buddies are online (as well as their status), add buddies to Messenger directly from your Hotmail address book, etc. Microsoft considers this to be a "convenience" for their users, and believe it or not, many Hotmail/Messenger users like this integrated environment, an "online community", so to speak. Hotmail no longer integrates with Windows Messenger, so if you are using XP and want to logon Hotmail without Messenger "launching itself", just uninstall MSN Messenger...then you can use Windows Messenger instead, and only when you wish to have it running.
OE does something similar. However, on XP it will continue to use Windows Messenger, even if MSN Messenger is installed. On the other hand, OE will continue to integrate with the latest version of MSN Messenger on downlevel operating systems.
One last hint: if you wish to use features other than IM in MSN Messenger on XP (videoconferencing, app sharing, etc), you will need to upgrade Windows Messenger to it's latest version. You don't have to use it, just have it upgraded. There are certain binaries that each reply upon the other to have on the machine in order to work properly.
