a few weeks ago my girlfriend installed msn messenger because she "neded" to use it when trillian wetn down, now i am not allowed to uninstall it which is hitting my "unrelenting hate for bloated/buggy/needlessly intrusive software" nerve.

does anyone else feel the same way about msn?

for that matter, what pieces of software do you find annoying but painfully essential (excluding OS)?
[/rant]

on a side note, to add to msn's intrusiveness, lately it has been starting up (read: icon) whenever anyone logs into hotmail or uses a .net passport. because it takes like 10 mintes to start up it then takes another 10 minutes to shut the mofo down.
aaaargh, i hate msn messenger.

does anyone know what is launching it and how i can stop it from comming up?

Outlook Express is launching it....

To remove MSN, load up the RUN Prompt and type,

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Modem Spy - the ugliest and buggiest piece of software I ever used. Yes, it works... But causes hard locks sometimes. And although I registered, it pops up the registration window each time the PC boots. Talk about being annoying. Emailing the creators of this POS was useless. Sigh.

I'm a Trillian user - 3 years and counting. MSN is defintely intrusive, and getting worse.

Complete and total BS. You can uninstall MSN Messenger from any Microsoft or Macintosh operating system released in the last seven years.

Either that, or your girlfriend rulz your azz when it comes to the machine.

I'm relatively certain you are yet another person who has confused MSN Messenger with Windows Messenger. You can find multiple workarounds to your debilitating problem by clicking the Search button to the upper-right of you screen.

Bash the correct program next time...

No, he's not. As I pointed out very clearly above, the result he claims as far as uninstall is not possible with MSN Messenger...unless, of course, one does not know how to properly uninstall ANY program from Windows operating systems.

And when someone goes off bashing a program, without knowing what he's talking about, he comes off looking as if he's trying to bait. Perhaps I'm behaving like a jerk, fine. But at least I know what I'm talking about.

There are quite a few differences between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger.

Hmm...Out of all the messenger programs I've ever used, MSN Messenger seems to be the best one.
I've never had a problem with it.

no need to be a tard about it

did you even read my post?

i clearly said msn messenger, not windows messenger, i got rid of that after my last format.

i have had a look in the options and unchecked a few of the options but i can't really be sure if it's stopped.

is there a way to quarentine a program, so if it is requested to open then it will pop up a dialog with what requested it?
kind of like a firewall but for windows?

i don't think it's outlook express thats launching it cause i haven't used it in years.

Replace or remove a DLL it needs, so you get an error when you try to start it. Then claim you are trying to fix it but that it may take a few days, and get her to use something else for the time being.

That's what you need. X-Setup. You can remove the MSN Messenger EXTENSIONS. MSN Messenger will still work perfectly fine BUT it will no longer start up automatically when you go to hotmail or open Outlook Express. Tada.

Up until SP1 for XP you were unable to even remove it. After that I removed it and everything seemed fine, until I rebooted, then IE would not access the internet anymore. I had to enable it again to make things work, POS.

I have it disabled in outlook express but it still starts up every so often, when it feels like it.

I think it is a good messenger service when I want it, but not when it wants to start up all by itself.

Actually it's painfully obvious especially since he stated his gf installed msn messenger because trillian wasn't working.

Yup. And I made it clear that I did...twice. Besides, when there is a topic title like yours, you should expect that someone is going to reply with just as much cynicism...this BBS isn't being hosted by Martha Stewart's website, ya know...
i clearly said msn messenger, not windows messenger, i got rid of that after my last format
You also clearly said you were not allowed to remove it, and you didn't use quotes the first time...which led me to believe you were running XP, and that the OS itself wouldn't allow an uninstall (which is known behavior). But I also assumed perhaps your girlfriend said "no" (I simply said it in a "colorful" way...). Further, you would be correct that a format gets rid of Windows Messenger...but the only way to not get it back again is to not install XP again on that formatted drive.
but she would just uninstall/reinstall and it would be back
Sorry, this part didn't make much sense...naturally, MSN Messenger will be back if you re-install it after uninstalling it, all software works that way. However, there's a known issue with Windows Messenger (and quite a few other core components in XP and W2K) that auto-repair themselves if the user tries to get rid of them...which further indicates to me (again) into believing perhaps you may actually be talking about Windows Messenger. But now that I know you really did mean MSN Messenger, I know that it's back again because it was purposely installed again.

Unfortunately, 911 ran into a Windows Messenger problem that affects a minority of users. For most people, using the hack to get rid of Windows Messenger doesn't impact them at all. But as I pointed out in several other threads, a few people will run into problems when they do this. Also 911, Windows Messenger can be hacked off of XP Gold as well...with SP1, you simply have the option to remove it from the Start menu via Add/Remove Windows Components...it's still installed otherwise.

MSN Messenger does not "launch itself" when logging on to Hotmail. This is something you can actually blame on Hotmail: their API's call Messenger. The reason for this design is that there is a considerable amount of Messenger integration within Hotmail, allowing you to begin IM sessions directly from the Inbox or an open email message, see which buddies are online (as well as their status), add buddies to Messenger directly from your Hotmail address book, etc. Microsoft considers this to be a "convenience" for their users, and believe it or not, many Hotmail/Messenger users like this integrated environment, an "online community", so to speak. Hotmail no longer integrates with Windows Messenger, so if you are using XP and want to logon Hotmail without Messenger "launching itself", just uninstall MSN Messenger...then you can use Windows Messenger instead, and only when you wish to have it running.

OE does something similar. However, on XP it will continue to use Windows Messenger, even if MSN Messenger is installed. On the other hand, OE will continue to integrate with the latest version of MSN Messenger on downlevel operating systems.

One last hint: if you wish to use features other than IM in MSN Messenger on XP (videoconferencing, app sharing, etc), you will need to upgrade Windows Messenger to it's latest version. You don't have to use it, just have it upgraded. There are certain binaries that each reply upon the other to have on the machine in order to work properly.

Both MSN and your GF are evil ;)

Is there any way you can have it working on one user profile but not another? Or does it just force its way into everything? I've never used it, just uninstalled it. :p
