MSN Messenger automatic activation

I'm running Win 98 SE on an old PC . When I run Outlook Express , MSN Messenger activates automatically with it . If I try to exit MSN Messenger , it tells me that Outlook Express requires it . I've looked through preferences etc , but can't find how to disable the automatic activation of MSN Messenger with Outlook Express . Is there any way to do this ? Thanks .

In OE, go to Tools->Options->General and uncheck the box that says "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger." Reboot.

If all else fails, just rename the Messenger executable (msmsgs.exe).

Thanks Darktubbly . I tried that and the MSN Messenger still automatically comes up with Outlook Express - just it doesn't sign in/logon automatically . Will renaming the .exe file not cause me any other problems ?

You do NOT have to rename it, and the executable is NOT msmsgs.exe. Just uninstall it. Or, there's a regkey floating around written by Jonathan Kay that will unbind Messenger from the claws of OE...

The original one that comes with XP IS called msmsgs.exe. Double-check your caps lock key BEFORE posting.

aviwil, if you really want to uninstall it, you can check out this page.

This thread has nothing to do with XP. The link you provided will do nothing for him. Double-check the opening text of the thread BEFORE posting.

No need for me to double-check my caps lock key...I didn't use it.

Slugbait , where can I find this :
