Ever since I did a clean install of Win98 first edition, my computer stops responding sometimes. If I hit Ctrl,Alt,Del there will be the message "msimn not responding". If I click on end task it goes away and works normal again. This doesn't happen with any particular program, I have had it happen at all times with all programs, but does seam to happen most when I try to open Outlook Express. This morning when I got up the monitor had not shut off like it should, no programs running, and when I hit Ctrl,Alt,Del I got the msimn message again. I ran my computer 2 years and never saw this message untill I clean installed win98, and I have done a clean install 4 times now thinking it might help. What is this and how do I fix it?

sounds like their might be a program running in memory that u don't want.

first of all, is there anything extra in the start menu/programs/startup submenu folder?

if so, delete what u don't want to start up.

if that doesn't solve the problem, go to start/run, and type the word, msconfig in. that allows you to edit every program that's starting up. be careful though, only delete the stuff you know about (like deleting Vortextray, or 3dfx tools is ok for me, becuase they are just utilities that come with my sound and video card).

MSIMN is Outlook Express. I am thinking that you might have some sort of virus. It shouldn't be starting up if you do not have Outlook Express active.

Thanks for your replys. This has happened on a clean install after a low level format of my hard drive. Could it be a defective Win98 disk loading information wrong and causing the problem? I have tried loading using two different CDROM's thinking one of them might not be reading the disk correctly-no difference. Any way of fixing the problem?

msimn is an abbreviation for MS Internet Mail and News, which was the name given to the original mail and news clients included with Win95. When they changed to Outlook Express, they named the executable based on that, for no apparent reason (the original MSIM&N didn't use an executable, it was a shell enhancement type thing that was supposed to look like just another folder on your desktop).

You might try updating your copy of IE and Outlook Express. Some versions of Outlook had problems when they were shut down, like if you had some outgoing mail that hadn't been sent yet and tried to close OE, it would lock up while trying to send it before closing. You may be using OE normally, then closing it and not realizing it's locked up, then when it sits for a while after locking up, the whole system eventually locks up.

Or you could have a virus, so you would also want to check that out. You can sign up on Mcafee's web site for a free trial period and use their online virus scan, if you don't have one installed.

WOW!! Thanks for the answer. Thats why I come here for answers, I can always find knowledgable people to give me thorough answers. I will try the viris check and if that don't work I will try a update. THANKS!!
