On an XP Pro box, used system restore to move time back a few wks. Computer runs ok but for the Internet Exploder. It reports "iexplore execute app error unknown software exception" when you try to open it.

Suggestions appreciated.
 
You most likely rolled back to a point before some IE update or extension was installed. You need to figure out what that was and reinstall it. Why would you go back that far anyway?

I had a stroke and have been out of commission for weeks -That is the only reason
