MSI X58 PRO vs ASUS P6T

I am getting another motherboard and am really liking the MSI x58 pro for $169. I have an MSI board in my old pc and have had no problems with it. I don't overclock or do SLI so that isn't a problem. The reason I'm asking is because MSI's reputation doesn't seem to be good across the other forums I've been reading on. While I'm at it what is the return policy for motherboards at NewEgg? If I go with the ASUS I'll wait for it to drop back to $219 although that is still $50 more than the MSI.

Get the MSI if you don't plan to OC. Not sure if there are any combos left, but recently where have been some X58/6GB combos for ~220.

I would have to go with you on this one: the UD5 is a better MB than both the Asus and the MSI. Its supposed to be an o/c'ers dream and I've read plenty of good reviews for it (this is the MB I'm going to buy).

I haven't used the MXI X58 Pro, but have had considerable experience with THREE different MXI X58 Eclipse, and soon will play around with an MSI X58 Platinum. I've also read about other people's experiences, and have read every review I can find on them.

If you aren't overclocking and aren't going to be running fast "enthusiast" RAM, then they will work fine.

While they are improving with every BIOS release, RAM support still isn't as good as the Asus P6T or the Intel X58SO, both of which I've also used. With those two boards, "enthusiast" 1600MHz RAM just plain works. Set it to specified settings (or enable XMP) and voila! With the MSI board... :| Also, overclocking isn't as good. The Asus P6T was able to clock my 965 test chip to 4GHz easy on stock voltage. None of the three MSI has been able to do that. Closest I've gotten was 3.87GHz with vCore and vQPI boosts.

CPU at stock speeds and RAM left on AUTO (which clocked itself to 1067MHz) the MSI boards ran just fine.

That being said, with the "right" RAM I've gotten 1600MHz memory at the 3.87GHz processor overclock and it was stable. I just wasn't able to get more while the Asus went higher with ZERO effort. Also, BIOSes keep improving. On initial BIOS 1.23 I was only able to barely hit 3.5GHz overclock on a 3.2GHz CPU. On BIOS 1.32 I was able to hit around 3.6GHz+. Now on BIOS 1.42b (beta?) and can do the 3.87GHz. Thus, they are improving.

Here's one of the many links to get you started: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1139845.html">http://forums.whirlpool.ne...chive.cfm/1139845.html</a>

Okay that is odd. Are you looking to replace the UD5 because you are experiencing the same issues?

Maybe there was a dodgy batch of giggy MBs distributed. I'm not sure. It's strange that one of posters had the same problem on a replacement Asus board, which was resolved by formatting and updaing the MB drivers and re-installing the OS.

To be honest I think I'll take my chances with the UD5. In the UK we have 12 months statutory warranty and if the MB dies outside of the 12 months I don't mind if I have to replace it. The only thing that would piss me off is if my external 1TB HDD died (only because I have 800GB of data stored on it), the CPU died or my GPU died. In the latter cases this is only because the CPU and GPU costs 2-3x more than any other component in my PC. Everything else is fair game for replacement. Oh and I'm going to buy a second large TB drive as a back up.

Good luck with the new MB purchase and tell us what you think of it (compared to the UD5).

So I was comparing the two motherboards on newegg and I don't see what is making the ASUS cost $70 more than the MSI. They're almost identical except for the brand. I think I'm going with the MSI.

I'm looking at these two boards also. Noticed lots of comments on the MSI board saying the NB runs very hot. Didn't see the same for the P6T in the comments. Doesn't mean it doesn't also run hot, just that it's something to maybe look into.

I was looking at the MSI pretty heavily but it seems to be a lot pickier about RAM. Newegg has the best RAM deals out there, but their return policy on most of the good sticks really sucks! If you end up with incompatible sticks you're hosed.

Also I've read a lot of bad stories about the MSI boards. I'd stay away from now. I think its just a matter of time before Asus and Gigabyte drop a sub $200 x58 board to compete with the MSI X58 Pro.

What happened to your old board? I remember you were eagerly awaiting the i7 release, and IIRC, you picked up a Gigabyte X58.

Just a question...

ThMSI board is a great basic X58 board for a decent price, I would still recommend this.

I returned it. The GIGABYTE X58 boards constantly squeal when C1E is enabled. Google "UD5 squeal" or "UD5 noise". And those things get loud. I'm just worried about the inadequate cooling on MSI boards. I'm not sure if I should spend extra on the ASUS or not.

I got the MSI Pro and have my 920 oced to 4.1g stable and I can do 4.5g (with 215x21) but not prime stable too, on Noctua NH-U12P.

I installed my MSI X58 PRO and am using it right now. It is AMAZING. It has so many features and has no sound unlike my GIGABYTE.
